I sent mine out awhile ago, almost a year before the wedding. I think an email is too impersonal, and also....a lot of people (older people) don't check email, or it could get caught in someone's 'junk mail'.

Depends too on what info you want to add other than save the date. We're sending ours out closer to the date because we are really trying to say start booking your hotel rooms! We only have the rate guaranteed until 4 weeks before the wedding so we want to give enough time for people to plan. You don't even have to send out save the dates at all if you don't want to.

I sent them out 8 months before

We sent ours around 6 months prior.
