Family planning (Namely Jewish couples)

Being that FH and I are from Eastern European and Russian Jewish descent, it has always been in the back of my mind to have the pre-natal genetic testing to find out if I am a carrier for a variety of genetic disorders. If I am a carrier AND FH is a carrier then we would more than likely adopt children. I have my paperwork ready to go to Quest for bloodwork and plan to do this soon as we were thinking about trying this year (06 OMG)to get prego a few months after the wedding. I am curious to know if anyone else gave this any thought. Or am I the only lunatic out there.

Nope you're not the only lunatic.

I was thinking of getting this done also since I am of hispanic descent and there are a lot of things that run in both sides of our family.

Re: Family planning (Namely Jewish couples)

Hi Leslie,

It is in the back of my mind as something to do as well, however, DH and I are not planning on having children just yet, so in about 2 years we will be filling out the same stuff. I will be 30 then and it will be about when we are planning on starting to try to get preggers. Unless we have a happy accident we are not planning on babies just yet. But if you are planning on having kids soon, then I would do all the testing now. I would not even wait for the wedding - this way you can be good to go for 2 months from now.
good luck!
Lisa

His family IS Russian. His last name is so identifiably Russian that our kids will sound like members of the KGB or makers of fine vodka!

Re: Family planning (Namely Jewish couples)

I knew about some of these tests like for:
Tay Sachs
and
Cystic Fibrosis

but I never heard of:
Bloom Syndrome
Canavan Disease
Familial Dysautonomia
Fanconi Anemia DNA MUT ( I am guessing DNA mutation)
Gaucher Disease
Niemann-Pick Disease

I am going to do some reading here.

No idea. I can ask. My grandfather was Russian too but back then the borders were different. It was Russia/Poland. I will have to ask!

This may be a stupid question but here goes....My finace is Jewish (both sides are from Russia/the Ukraine). I am Catholic but my paternal grandfather is from the Ukraine. Would it be in my best interest to undergo such tests?

What do you have to do to get this done?

My FH is catholic, and I'm russian orthodox/half jewish. Should I be concerned?

Re: Family planning (Namely Jewish couples)

I would ask your doctor. I wouldnt give this type of advice with out knowing more and I wouldnt want to scare anyone. I am sorry if I did.

I saw an episode of Law and Order SVU where a Jewish mother killed her child under the guise of a mercy killing because she found out her child had Tay Sachs and that disease is painful, killing many of its young victims by the age of 5. Her husband was a converted Jew (from Catholicism) so it was impossible that this child was his. She had an affair with a man who was a carrier for Tay Sachs and killed the baby to cover the affair. Its a stretch but who knows.
