town hall/catholic brides

this is kind of an odd question, but i may be in this situation beforehand, which kind of is a PITA. i may have to get married before my date at town hall b/c of immigration issues (quite a long story ).

Now i have a date set for my catholic wedding and i want very much to be married in a catholic church so that is recognised etc. if you get married beforehand at town hall, is this a complication and something that will not allow you to get married in a catholic church? i have heard of people doing this, but i was wondering if any of you ladies know or if anyone has done this?

thanks

eta: forgot some words lol

Re: town hall/catholic brides

My cousin and his wife (my MOH) got married at City Hall ten years before their 'church' wedding. They had no problems. I would say that it's OK.

Re: town hall/catholic brides

That shouldn't be a problem at all.

Re: town hall/catholic brides

I know a girl who got pregnant and got married and then a few years later got married in the Catholic Church with no problems. So I dont think it would be a problem.

Re: town hall/catholic brides

Talk to your priest about it. You would be doing what they call a convalidation. I would suggest talking about it before hand just so you have all the paper work properly filled out. It sounds like you have a valid situation (not just-I wanted to get married on the beach) so there will hopefully not be any problems with getting it approved.

My FI's co-worker had a similar situation-his wife is from the Czech Republic and they had to have a civil ceremony prior to the church because of immigration laws.
Good Luck!

My cousin and his wife got married by a judge in their house a year and half before their Church wedding. I don't think you will have a problem.
