DIY cake topper?

Anyone make their own? Whats involved?

My friend is a professional artist, and for a living he makes things like tose beautiful xmas ornaments, and actually makes large models you see at malls for the holidays. I asked him if he would consider making our cake topper, and he said yes!!!

So, what kind of materials are used? He'd be baking it, I know... please help???

What do you want for the topper? Is it a monogram? If so, it is pretty easy to do and it doesn't require any baking.

I was going to try to make mine, but an artist quoted me real cheap, so I figured, leave it up to the pros.
I was going to use that clay, Sculpy? Or Femo? I know that the colors are $$$, but the white is cheaper, if you can paint it.

I am doing the Monogram.. I just ordered the materials this weekend. I got the 6inc last name intial and ordered blue and clear crystals.

I just it come out as pretty as Janie's (SIBRIDE06)

No monogram - actually us as bride and groom - he is incredbly talented - he could do this for a lvong (well, he does - but not cake toppers - big things you see at malls or store windows - he works with a huge company in SF) - what works better - Sculpy or Femo? He made xmas ornaments for his friends out of what I would like him to use for our topper - he baked - he is extremely anal - he's going to want to make sure its perfect!
