Re: NWR: House advice needed
Hmmm....I guess it depends if you want to continue living with his grandma or not. If you buy the house in Lynbrook you will get to live on your own, but if she sells you her house what would happen? would you guys just switch which parts of the house you would occupy? Sounds confusing. I would think I would prefer to get something that is all my own. But if you are very close to his grandma then I guess it would be comfortable to keep living with her with you as the owners, but in that case couldnt you just let her know about the problem? Which has a better school district? Which is a more desirable location? Im currently trying to buy a house too so I know how aggravating this can all be. I guess to me it just seems like if you are just going to buy the house from grandma and have her keep living there too and you are already renting there for cheap, why not just keep renting for awhile and save up some more money and hope that the market slows down(which it appears to be doing in my search). In other words if you are just going to buy from grandma why not just keep the situation how it is and buy from her later when maybe she is more ready or you have more money to play around with and you can choose to go elsewhere then? Sounds to me like you want Lynbrook though--I know how it feels when you think you may be getting one thing(even if not perfect) and then another option comes up. Even though its nice to have options, sometimes it would be so much easier if there wasnt:)) Good Luck in whatever you pick!!

I live in lynbrook. What area is the house in? North side, South Side or Westwood area? It does sound like you want the house in lynbrook alot more.

Re: NWR: House advice needed
Thank you so much for your advice! In FS, we are in the VS school district (in which I teach). The thing is, if we stay here, it most likely will not be forever. I can see us living here for 5 to 8 years more, at which point hopefully we will have kids that are ready for school. The thing is, in FS, we will most definitely be moving. In Lynbrook, we will probably stay. However, in FS, we can have a BEAUTIFUL house. Gram will live with us, which is not a problem at all as she is very active and capable, and at the point when she isn't in that position she will live with her son (DH's father). If we buy her house, we will remodel and make it a big one family with all new everything. She will basically be living with us. That doesn't really bother me as we are very close and she is wonderful. I just feel like the house in Lynbrook is our opportunity this year to live there. I think the market will level a bit, but not crash, and when the summer comes, it will raise again. So basically we either buy now, or wait until next fall to have a better selection. AH! so frustrating. Thank you for helping me think things out though!

The house is close to westwood, but considered north. It is close to hendrickson.

Ok, i dont live to far from hendrickson either. I love the north side/westwood area. Its a very tight knit community. When FI and I are ready to buy a house we will most likely be back in lynbrook.

Re: NWR: House advice needed
I would say be careful about completely redoing a house in Franklin Square....my FH rents in FS now and it seems that alot of people have built the houses up and fixed them up and they do not seem to be selling because they built the house up better than the area. There are several houses right by where he is that have been built up and have been up for sale for months--but cant sell. Just something to be aware of as far as fixing it up if you plan on leaving in several years:))

Re: NWR: House advice needed
Thank you I appreciate the honesty. We aren't looking to build up as much as we would gut it and put in the appliances and things we want. THe house is very outdated and needs some big updating, not necessarily the blown out huge garish homes that seem to be popping up everywhere over here.

Re: NWR: House advice needed
i live right off hendrickson. i think the house you're looking at is 5 houses from me...FM me and i'll tell you! is it right next to a little house on a corner??we are in the process of possibly buying our own house in lynbrook as well. i really have no desire to live here, but this possibility is almost too good to give up because it's my grandpa's house (he recently passed.)
i don't think you should make grandma hurry. honestly, the market is a little slow and the people in lynbrook are probably more desperate than you think. let them wait a little especially since it doesn't seem like there's a bidding war going on.
take a few days to think about it. they're probably putting on the pressure because you're young and they think that they can.

Re: NWR: House advice needed
Oh and when I said building up better than the area I didnt mean to say FS isnt a nice area. Just that people wont spend $700,000 on a home in an area of $450,000 homes...same as where I live(wasnt sure if it came out right when I said it before)I just put a bid on a house 2 days ago that we are going to find out about tomorrow hopefully---its a house going for way more than we offerred and they are totally entertaining our offer because nothing is selling and they had 2 deals fall through--so I totally agree with SummerBride06 in that people are getting more desperate than they want to let you know--this is a slow time of year too. My dad is helping us with the negotiating because I totally think with my heart and would've way overpaid--but he is helping me wait things out to get things cheaper(hes in real estate) Boy is it nerve-racking though!! But so far hes been right about people getting desperate around now...hope i can sleep tonight:))
ETA--sorry about all my long answers but as you can tell this is my current stress out too!!

NO! I appreciate your help so much! FS is a nice area, but I much prefer Lynbrook in the long run. Again that is just my preference and I agree with the overpriced houses in the area. The house across the street from us is literally dilapidated (they have a fridge in the driveway!) and they think they will get 550000 for it! We aren't looking to spend more than 450000 with repairs, so if we resold in 4 or 5 years we would definitely make a profit. Where are you looking to buy? FM if you don't want to post. And again, I truly appreciate your opinion. Good luck!
