Your stainless steel silver
I registered for stainless steel rather than 'real' silver. For anyone else who has stainless steel, are you treating it like real silver - only using it on special occasions - or as your everday silveware? The reason I ask is that our stainless steel goes really well with our fine china but not as well with our casual china. I'm not sure I should purchase it if it doesn't match with both?
Thanks

The first pic is the silverware we registered for. The last pic is one that seems to match both but DH was just 'eh' about it.

I don't treat my stainless flatware any differently. Stainless is extremely durable abd is made to take abuse, heat, etc for many yrs.IMO, the flatware you chose is lovely and either one would go with both your everyday & formal.

Re: Your stainless steel silver
we did not register for real silver because I couldn't allow anyone I know to pay those insane prices for them. We did register for really nice stainless steele that we will use only with our china. I already had everyday flatware prior to getting married that we use.

Re: Your stainless steel silver
I registered for stainless steel silver and it came in a nice wooden caddy with a serving set, so I'm saving it for better 'special occasion' use. It was 4x's the price of the every day flatware I use. I do put it in the dishwasher, because it says I can

Re: Your stainless steel silver
my 18/10 is used for everyday. My sterling is used with my fine china for special occassions.
The sterling doesn't necessarily match- I have 2 china sets, one fine china which is platinum rimmed and another Holiday set that is gold rimmed. I just like to save the sterling for special occassions.

Re: Your stainless steel silver
I don't have special occassion flatware. We didn't get it off our registry and frankly we have changed our minds about what we like. We are now looking for a stainless set. Silver is too much work to take care of..polishing...etc...

Re: Your stainless steel silver
Our stainless steel silver is in a nice wooden box and we're treating it like good silver! It wouldn't match our everyday dishes.

Re: Your stainless steel silver
I registered for 2 separate sets of stainless as I was not going to have to worry about polishing silver. I got Reed and Barton for both and just love it, they are both 18/10

Same here! We chose it to match our nice dishes. (No...we didn't register for China either.)
We already have stainless that go with our casual dishes that we've been using for the past 6 years. Yes...they age over time, so our nice flatware stays with the nice dishes.

Re: Your stainless steel silver
We use our stainless steel everyday. I do not have a seperate set for special occasions. I will get my Mom's stainless when the time comes, (my married name starts with same letter as her maiden name) and that's engraved and more fancy.

Re: Your stainless steel silver
We got the cambridge chop stainless steel set(your second set) as our every day silverware. The have a really nice feel to them and have held up well thus far. We put them in the dishwasher and they are fine.We were lucky and received our entire 12 piece reed and barton francis the i sterling silver set as one of our wedding presents. It goes with our good china. We have that in the wooden box and plan on using it for special occasions.

Re: Your stainless steel silver
our stainless steel is the same pattern as our china, and is a lot heavier than our everyday, so we only use it with the china, for special occassions.i like being able to have special dishes and flatware

Re: Your stainless steel silver
We also got two sets of stainless steel - one is a little 'fancier' and heavier, so we have it saved for special occasions to use with our china - and we have an everyday set. I personally think it's a good idea to have two, especially if you're going to use the second set with china, because even though stainless is strong & can handle a lot of use, it does show some type of wear with time, so it might eventually not match up when you use it with your china.... just a thought. Both sets you showed are very pretty though.

Re: Your stainless steel silver
I got stainless steel, and we have been using it daily. I couldn't stand polishing silver when I was growing up, and I know I'll probably rarely use real silver. Stainless can be quite lovely these days--I think fewer people are getting real silver. Who has time to care for it?

Re: Your stainless steel silver
My original question was worded very poorly. I'm curious what is the difference between 'expensive' stainless and less expensive stainless? I found an example of two patterns are are pretty darned close to one another, one is from Crate and Barrel for $35 a place setting and the other is from Target and is $30 for 20 pieces. It ALL can be put in dishwashers and really, in terms of pure value, stainless is stainless if its the same ratio, right? Is it just the same as buying pants from Old Navy vs. Bloomingdales? You pay for the name?

That's a good question! The Calvin Klein stainless set I posted is $60 per 5 piece setting and the Gorham is about $40 per setting! I think they're both 18/10 so I wonder what the difference is.

I have stainless steel for my 'good' silver and yes treating it like 'real silver' -- sterling was MUCH TOO expensive and who wants to polish them. And I have another stainless steel set for my everyday (I think it was a little cheapper).
