photographer dilemma...sorry kinda long
so i found this photographer who's work i have fallen in love with. she recently moved from new york city to california to shoot weddings there, but she'll be in new york the weekend of our wedding and said she's available to shoot our wedding.she sent me some galleries online, and also mailed me some of her promotional material. everything is beautiful and if i could book her now, i would.
the only problem is, FH is not comfortable booking her based the work she's emailed to us. i think her work speaks for itself, and there's really no need to meet w/her to look at her work in person, but FH is insisting that she mail us actual photographs or an album.
she is very pricey, so i understand his concern, but at the same time i feel like i'll look like a wacko by asking her to mail us actual photographs and/or an album?!? this photographer books many of her weddings w/o even meeting her clients, so i feel like i'm being a pain in the butt by asking her to do this. (o and he also wants me to ask her if she can be more negotiable on the price).
so anyways, my question is...is it too much to ask her to mail us photos (even if we offer to pay for the shipping)?
i dont know what to do because i love her work....but i dont want her to be like, okay forget it...you guys are being too complicated...

I don't think it's unreasonable to ask for more. I loved this one photographer's sample albums that he had out. Then he gave me the proof CD to give to my friend who used him for her wedding. Well I took it upon myself to look at the CD and realized that the only good proofs were the ones in the albums and was not impressed at all with the rest of his work!

Those are great photos...I can understand FH's concern, maybe go look at another photographer to make him happy. You might even find someone you like better.

Re: photographer dilemma...sorry kinda long
I understand your feeling but I think that a photographer is some you need to be personally comfortable with as well as like their work. You should meet her in person, if that's possible. She is the only vendor that will be with you every moment of the day. If you don't like her personality, it could become a huge issue. It's not something that you want to worry about.Good luck. The pictures are fantistic. Definately ask for more.

I would definitely ask for more or see if/when she'll be in NY again to sit down with her.

Re: photographer dilemma...sorry kinda long
I have to agree with your FH on this. A photographer is so vital to your day because when all is said and done, the pictures (and video) are what will bring the day back to you. I would not book a photographer based on emailed and online photos, nor would I book a photographer that I will be spending my entire day with, without meeting them. Personality is so crucial when it's a vendor you will have so much individual interaction with.

I agree w/ this, but I also see what you're saying. I practically booked my photog just b/c a friend of mine used him. He was the same- a little pricier, and he def. doesn't have people asking him to discount his prices. But I met w/ him twice anyway, and fell in love w/ his style (similar to your lady) and we booked. But listen to FH, he has a point. I don't know if she'll mail you an album, but maybe she can give you references?

Hey - is this the same person you mentioned
If so, I think she can send you a proof CD to make FH happy
Also, if you cannot meet her in person, how about a phone interview to see if you vibe with her

I totally agree with this. I understand FH's concern. My FH was like that too. We went to 5 weddings last year and all he paid attention to was the photographer/videographer. I barely noticed them...which is a good thing IMO coz if they're good, you won't notice them as a guest. Anyway, ask if she can make you a CD of proofs so that you can view them before you make your decision.

Re: photographer dilemma...sorry kinda long
I don't think asking to an album/cd is unreasonable at all. This is one of the few items you'll have long after the wedding is over. You should be happy and 100% confident with your photographer.

I think you have every right to ask for more pictures. You will be spending a lot of money and you and fh should both be sure she is the right photographer for you.Welcome New Vendors
