Stupid question- What is hand cancelling?

I'm going to send out my invitations next week and I have no clue what everyone is talking about when they say they 'wait and watch them' take care of the invites.

What are you watching them do? What is hand cancelling?

when you take it to the post office, they stamp it with a hand stamp to 'cancel' the postage as opposed to running it through the machine so it doesn't destroy the invites...

but i heard that they end up putting it through a machine afterwards anyway?

My mom works at a post office, and she said they don't run it through the machine. Though you never know, each place is different.

My mom said they always Hand Cancel the invitations at her post office.

i had aparty for my parents ansd the post office said they would do it, well half of the guests never got an invite. the others looked like they had been through a war.

yeah... its when they mark off the postage so it can't be used again.... usually mail goes through a machine that does it, but sometimes people ask for their invitatinos to be done by hand so the machine doesnt' runin them....
but what i don't get is, they still hvae to go through sorting machines to get where they are going... so to me, its kind of pointless to ask them to hand cancel them, and its one of those things thats not worth stressing out over...
