Things to do in Maui and Kauai?
Hey does anyone have any recommendations, must sees, etc. for these places - besides the obvious - beaches, water. Any special excursions, specific Luau (sp?) TIA

I've gotten a list of recommendations. The Old Lahaina Luau in Maui along with different booze cruises have come highly recommended. I've also gotten recommendations about the Road to Hana (some people have recommended it and some people say skip it because it's really long and a bit of a scary ride).
In Kauai, my friends recommended the helicopter tour. She showed me pics and they are amazing. She also recommended the private dinner on the beach at the Princeville.

You need to make reservations at the boat house it is a restaurant right on the beach!! Go there make that ASAP on Kauai!! Also do the Luaua in Princeville that one is the best!!
Also ATV tours!! The Helicopter was cool but I was done in 15mins. I started to get alittle sick up there! But it is beautiful and the waterfalls are amazing!! Try surfing also!!

Re: Things to do in Maui and Kauai?
We did lots of relaxing on both islands. DH was sick for the first few days in Maui, so we didn't get to do as much as we had wanted to do. On Maui: We loved the Road to Hana. We bought the CD for the car at the gas station nearby. It was helpful. Our favorite restaurant on Maui was Mama's Fish House. It was an awesome setting & great food. Our Concierge at the hotel made the reservation and we got a table by the windows. It was so beautiful. We did walk around Lahaina. That was fun and we did a boat ride from there that was fun. I wanted to go parasailing, but didn;t fit that in. We did the Luau at one of the hotels in Wailea. I can't remember the name, but I think it was the Maui Prince? It was great. I liked that it was close to our hotel (the Four Seasons & they ran a shuttle to it, which was convenient.)Kaui: We drove around alot to explore. We did end up hiking in Waimea Canyon. I wanted to kill DH because we are not hikers & ended up going much too far. It was a tough hike for amateurs, but the views were amazing. I could see why it was called 'the Grand Canyon' of the Pacific.
Have fun!!

Thanks guys! I also heard mixed reviews about the road to Hanna, but I think I want to do it.

slwh2005 - Thank you for all the info. We are also staying at the Four Seasons in Maui. I'm glad that they have a shuttle. We will definitely try Mama's Fish House.

I did the road to Hanna in a rented car & yes we went on the path they said voids the car warranty, but it was so worth it....BUT the guy I was with was in such a rush to get TO Hanna, that we didn't enjoy the 'getting there' part which was what it was all about. The views were spectacular & the waterfall. It is pretty hairy though & you had to beep your horn constantly around the curves...definitely a once in a lifetime experience.

I have as well, mainly the people who were like don't do it are the ones who turned around and drove back the way they went in as opposed to going the way you aren't supposed to.

We LOVED the Four Seasons. We felt so pampered there. We went to Mama's the same day we did the road to Hana (it's on the way there/back from Hana.) We weren't sure we wanted to do the road to Hana either, but we did like it. We just had no expectations, so we weren't disappointed. The CD was really helpful. The CD told us to go down this one road that we never would have known about and it had the most beautiful beach there with all of these rocks and huge waves crashing and no one was there. It was so pretty.
Four Seasons had the shuttle to the Luau at the Maui Prince. The Concierge recommended another one too, but we wanted to go on the night that the Maui Prince had it. At Kauai we stayed at the Princeville and we saw their Luau from our room. The one at the Maui Prince looked so much better.

Re: Things to do in Maui and Kauai?
Suggestions for Maui:If you are going to do the Road to Hana, definitely purchase the book 'Maui Revealed'. This book was like our bible when we were in Maui a year and a half ago. The people who write it tell you all about hidden things to go see on your drive around the island. We followed their directions and ended up at a gorgeous waterfall and were the only ones there! It was awesome! Just make sure you plan on spending an entire day doing the drive... there is just so much to see!
Also, you may want to think of doing a sunrise trip up to the top of Haleakala mountain. YOu have to get up really early, but it is worth it. You can go with a bike company, get to the top see the sunrise and then bike down. I suggest finding a company that lets you freely ride to the bottom... many of the companies make you plan 'follow the leader' in a row as you ride the bikes down and it isn't as fun! Enjoy!
