I was thinking about donating my dress after the wedding...

I just feel its pointless to keep it, spend money on preserving it - I don't think FH's daughters are going to ever want to wear my dress because its fun to look for your own, and it just may be out of style by the time they are getting hitched, plus - who's to say I will have daughters of my own? I may have boys...

Anyone else donate their dress? I would love to find somewhere for women who really have no money to buy a dress, or have an expensive wedding, but would still love the opportunity to wear a nice dress...

as for selling it, its not like I'll get that much money for it anyway - and I would love to do somehting good and give back a little!

Anyway have any suggestions?

Re: I was thinking about donating my dress after the wedding...

I wanted to do the same thing for 1st wedding dress (yes, I still have it!).

All donation places sell their stuff, so unless you know someone already without money and you can give it to her.. go ahead. I know the Goodwill sells for sure. I was told Salvation army also but I am not sure.

I was thinking about a consignement store. There is one in Farmingdale. My boss is thinking about selling her veil and headpiece there.

But now that I think about it, I believe churches don't sell donations.

Re: I was thinking about donating my dress after the wedding...

I was thinking of donating my dress too. My friend suggested that I have a professional place the dress in a frame and make it a piece of art. My mom thinks that is tacky but I LOVE the idea!

Re: I was thinking about donating my dress after the wedding...

I am not preserving my gown. Noone wants to wear a 20-25-year dress.

Imagine if we had to wear the big pooffy-sleeve dresses in fashion in the 80's.

I would die laughing!!!!!

What a great idea - especially when you think about all the brides in the New Orleans/Florida areas... Here I was just gonna SELL mine on eBay, but I love your idea!

Re: I was thinking about donating my dress after the wedding...

FYI for those preserving their gown. Someone I know from out of state (south), had her gown preserve and found out after opening the box that they had cut the bottom of her dress. When asking why, what, who authorized this, she was told a lot of places did it because dresses were too big to fit in the box.

We probably could open our own donation business with the girls here...

Maybe we can keep a thread on this one...

Re: I was thinking about donating my dress after the wedding...

I donated my dress directly to a charity shop in my area...It wasn't designer, so I couldn't donate it to the specific charities for wedding dresses, and I didn't want to preserve it.

Re: I was thinking about donating my dress after the wedding...

Im actually looking forward to keeping it and preserving it and then one day 25 or 30 years later taking it out and try squeezing into it and dancing around it with FH in our house...who knows, maybe I'll do it when one of my kids get engaged or somethin...

I wasn't going to post it but I thought that maybe some people are fine with donating for that cause. If it's out there then there are people who donate their dresses to help families who can not afford to dress their child up for a burial.

P.S. This was my first time reading about this too. I googled donating wedding dresses and there it was.

Re: I was thinking about donating my dress after the wedding...

I'm sure there are charities that do this like the prom dress and business suit charaties. There's gotta be. I'll see what I can find. Myself, I'm turning my dress into a cocktail dress. Or I'll wear it to the Emmys. Or both!

ETA: I found these two so far (in addition to what's been found already)
They'll sell your dress and give the proceeds to a Breast Cancer foundation

Donate your dress to a bride in Israel
