Repost from '06 Board...Irish Brides...Reception Music

My FI and I are both Irish...My FI is half...his Dad really wants the song 'Danny Boy' played at the reception.....I think this song is quite depressing and have never heard it played at a wedding reception...I sugguested to my FI that we incorporate it into the mass but his Dad wants it at the reception.....Where in the reception does this song fit???

ugh i dont know...im an irish girl and really dont like that song and cant see it fitting into a reception. maybe towards the end of the night? there are so many fun irish songs out there! of course im at a loss right now, but you'll find some good ones ! my grandfather and i danced to 'the rose of mooncoin' which was the first song he and my grandmother danced to . She has passed away but we were married on their anniversary and since i have a close relationship with him i thought it was a nice touch ;)

My parents are from Ireland and I sing, so I know a lot of Irish music. To be honest, I can't think of anywhere during the reception you might want to play this. Danny Boy, if you know the lyrics, is actually a very depressing song. It's basically about someone that has died and she is calling to her love (Danny) to come to her... there's one line where she says something along the lines of come to my grave and say a prayer for me. It's actually played at some funerals. however, all hope is not lost---the melody of the song is beautiful... perhaps your band or DJ could play an instrumental version of the song for you to dance to (it is slow) or perhaps as light music while people eat????

Also, there are a lot of fun Irisdh music that are more appropriate for a wedding.... FM if you want some ideas.
