I thought blocking hotel rooms got you a discount?

Hey there. I recently booked my reception at the Hamlet Wind Watch in Hauppague.

I called the Hyatt next door to see what the rate would be if I blocked about 20 rooms . The rates on the internet for next March are $119 and $129 for the regular, cancelable rate. They quoted me $123 for the block.

Is this unusual? I thought for sure if we told them we would need 20 rooms that we'd get a really good deal, especially since it is a business hotel and dead on weekends?

Re: I thought blocking hotel rooms got you a discount?

It usually gets you a lower rate than the normal rate, not the internet rate though unfortunately.

I have more than 20 rooms blocked there for this December at $129/room (and my reception is there) so I think you're definitely getting a good deal.

Re: I thought blocking hotel rooms got you a discount?

I haven't heard of anyone getting a rate lower than 100.00. I blocked a dumpy hotel and their rate is 109.00 a night with the block for 10 rooms.

Re: I thought blocking hotel rooms got you a discount?

I always thought the same thing until I went there to book I will be staying there the night before my wedding and the night of ! It's gorgeous there, but soo expensive. Unless you are having your wedding there, they really don't give you much of anything in regards of a discount

Re: I thought blocking hotel rooms got you a discount?

It usually gets you some sort of discount. Why not try negotiating for the internet rate! Good luck.

Re: I thought blocking hotel rooms got you a discount?

I thought about that. My FH made the call, so maybe I should get on the line and play hardball . The Sheraton in Smithtown is offering a lower rate too, I might mention that.

The AAA rate is $116. I don't see why they wouldnt match that.

Weird weird weird!

I would definitely mention that. I got a few hotels to lower their price based on what other hotels quoted me.

Re: I thought blocking hotel rooms got you a discount?

I guess it depends on the hotel, i am staying at the inn at fox hollow and i know if you book a block of 10 or more rooms you get a discount. Maybe if you call them again, they can do better on the rate...

Re: I thought blocking hotel rooms got you a discount?

i don't think the discounts are signifigant so I wouldn't sweat it. I blocked the Marriott Fairfield Inn at $129/night. I think they sell for $139 or something.

Re: I thought blocking hotel rooms got you a discount?

Oy! I have to get into this headache soon!!! I'm not blocking... just giving guests names and numbers of hotels! If the hotels can give me a straight up rate and a contact name for my guests, that's good enough. I do not want to get involved with discounts and penalties. None of my three siblings did it and guests got here okay.

Re: I thought blocking hotel rooms got you a discount?

I thought blocking rooms gave you a little discount as well. I don't think much. But if you want try to call them and see what the best offer they can give you is. It does not hurt to ask. Good Luck!

Re: I thought blocking hotel rooms got you a discount?

I work for a hotel company and unless the block is huge, we do not really offer discount. It's more of a convenience for you the consumer to have a block to guarantee rooms.

That happened to me too, but because I am booking for 07 the price is higher than what I found online...and even though I am blocking rooms now they won't give me the 06 price

Re: I thought blocking hotel rooms got you a discount?

You do not necessarily get a lower rate. It just guarantees they will hold the space. Many of our guests stayed at the hotels where we blocked rooms but used AAA rates or AARP rates or other programs as they booked OUTSIDE of the blocks. We even encouraged them to do that.

Re: I thought blocking hotel rooms got you a discount?

I called all of the Hauppauge hotels and the Windwatch offered the weakest deal. We ended up using the Sheriton who were the best to work with of all of them - they gave us a discount for the block but in the end, the internet deal was better than the rate that blocked out for us.

I actually Blocked off rooms in 2 places. The Four Points Sheridan (139.00) and The Executive Inn. (119.00), this is so my guests can have a choice.

Just keep in mind how convenient the hotel is for the guests. If it's a question of a couple of dollars in the end, it might not be worth it to block elsewhere (since all they have to do is walk across the parking lot to get to the hotel).

Closer to the date the internet rates go up. When I first looked at the prices online, just over a year before my wedding, my internet rates were equal to the amount that I was quoted for the block but, now they are higher (and my wedding is 9 months away).

Good luck!
