Married girls - please help with this random question
Your wedding gift checks - were they made out to your maiden name + husband's married name OR to Mr. and Mrs. husband's last name? Does this matter when you try to deposit the check?I'm going to be keeping my maiden name or hypenating my last name - will that be a problem if I get a check made out to Mrs. Husband's last name???
A friend at work just got back some no RSVP's to her wedding with checks made out to her married name and this topic came up...

Re: Married girls - please help with this random question
I didn't change my last name and DH and I already had a joint checking account. Check were either made out to Mr. and Mrs. DH's first name, or just his name or to me with his last name. We had no problems with depositing anything.

Re: Married girls - please help with this random question
ok so the bank didn't care if the names were different for depositing purposes? I assume they deal with this all the time and it wouldn't be a problem but given how strict the banking regulations have gotten since Sept. 11th, I wasn't sure if it would be a problem. Thanks!

Re: Married girls - please help with this random question
I changed my name, but we deposited the checks prior to me legally changing it. We opened a joint bank account the day after the wedding and we had no problem depositing checks made out to Mr. and Mrs. Husbands Last name, even though I didn't have any ID to show my new name.

Re: Married girls - please help with this random question
First of all, make sure you have a joint checking account before the wedding-- it will make everything easier.I hyphenated my name, and our bank did not, and still doesn't, have a problem depositing checks made out to Mr. and Mrs. HisName-- or any other combination of our names.
However, if you do any banking outside of your home branch, it may be an issue. For example, we live in Manhattan, but we never moved our accounts here. If I get a check that's made out to my hyphenated name, I can take it to any branch in the city and deposit it, but if it's made out to Mr. and Mrs. HisName, I have to trek out to Long Island to our home branch to depoit it successfully.

Re: Married girls - please help with this random question
We deposited all checks into DH's account (not a joint account) a few days after the wedding and had no questions about any of the checks. Checks were mostly made out as Mr. & Mrs Smith or C&C Smith. I just signed them with my new name, even though I had not officially changed it yet.

The reason a lot of people write checks is b/c in case the card/check gets lost or possibly stolen, they can just cancel the check. If you write the check out to cash, anyone can cash it.
Almost all of our checks were written out to Mr. and Mrs. Married Name. DH and I set up a joint account before the wedding. We both signed the back of the checks and had no problem depositing them the next day.

Re: Married girls - please help with this random question
We received checks with Mr. and Mrs., made out to cash, made out in his name and made out in my name. They all were fine, I just made sure that whoever the check was made out to signed the check since we have a joint account the checks made out to Mr and Mrs were fine because we both signed.

I'm not married yet, but i used to work for a bank so i thought i could be helpful. If you have a joint account already that would be helpful! if you have seperate accts but bank at the same place, they should be able to deposit the checks as well as long as they can verify the othes signature (depends on bank policy) A check made payable to you AND someone else must be put into and acct with both names on it (its a law)
You can deposit checks into the acct with the married name, just inform the bank that you have gotten married and once your marriage cert comes in you will have to change the names on the acct. They will deposit the checks for you.
I know it can be annoying, but there are people who steal from there spouses and so on...people do shady things when it comes to money, I've seen it all!

I didn't change my name, and we didn't have a joint account. I got checks in all different kinds of ways. Any check made out to Husand & Wife HisLastName, I signed it exactly as it was written, and we deposited it into my husband's account. We had no problems whatsoever.

I had a mix-you'l be fine--banks don't have a problem if you're depositing--I think withdrawing would be an issue.

Re: Married girls - please help with this random question
We opened a joint checking account before the wedding at Commerce (because they're open on Sunday). Our checks were made out to every name possible. DH & I signed each check that had our own name on it. We deposited all the checks and everything went smoothly.

Can the joint checking account by in your maiden name? Or do you have to have your married name on the account? Thanks

Yes, it can be in your maiden name. DH and I had a joint account before we were married and we deposited all the checks in that account BEFORE I changed my name and we had no trouble at all, regardless of how the check was made out.

If you open up a joint account before the wedding, it would have to be in your maiden name. I don't think any bank will let you open up an account in your married name before you get married. Once you're married, if you change your name, you just have to show them your marriage certificate. Of course, my bank messed up and changed my name automatically without me ever showing them anything.
