Alternative to a Reception Location i.e. botanical garden

Has anyone looked into alternatives to reception locations? I am trying to have a cost effective wedding but at the same time I don't want to have it in the church's basement. I was thinking botanical gardens, museum, something different or even a hotel isn't a bad idea. Is it cheaper to go this route? Any suggestions are helpful! Thanks!

Not sure what the costs of this sort of thing in Long Island, but generally this is how it works in NYC: Most historical or 'unique' reception sites charge a 'site fee'. This fee can range anywhere from 3K to 10K. Then you must bring in a caterer - most times you must choose from a list of vendors that have been approved by the site. In Brooklyn, there are two places you can hold your wedding in Prospect Park.

We looked into this. We found it to be more expensive (due to the site fee on top of catering fees) and a lot more labor intensive (making sure tables, chairs, linens are rented, etc.) Anyway, you can have it a lot of places. We were interested in the Museum of Art in Roslyn. I know you can do weddings & receptions at the NY Botanical Garden in the Bronx, Brooklyn Botanical Garden, and the aquarium in Riverhead. Check the website or call any place that interests you and ask. I've heard that the Met doesn't do weddings anymore (used to be at the oblisk) b/c too many guests were touching or taking things out of the exhibits. You can do ceremonies & photography at the Queens Botanical Garden (not sure about recpetions but I think no) and photography only at Old Westbury Gardens. Hope that helps.

ONe of the Lessing's locations is at Sunken Meadow State Park and is right on the beach. It's a bit cheaper than other halls and they do cater.
