SWR: Best free checking account

FH and I need to open a joint checking account before the wedding. I've heard that Commerce Bank and Washington Mutual are both good. It will mainly be for paying bills, and we'll deposit our wedding checks there before sending them off to gain interest in ING. Anyone have recommendations or can tell me why they use which bank?

We just opened a commerce & i like it, they have great hours..
they are offering first box of checks right now too. I didn;t know that until I rcvd. them in the mail, b/c i applied & did it all online.
i would reccommend commerce though

Commerce has the best hours. Open late on weeknights, open Sundays and holidays. Also they refund your ATM fees if you have more than a certain amount in your account. They also do not charge a fee if you use another bank's ATM.

I've been banking with Commerce and have been happy. Checking is free for one year and it's free going forward if you have $100 average in the account each month.

They have great hours and the first box of checks is free. They also have free online bill paying to make that box of free checks last longer!

I have savings and checking accts at Commerce and love it. They offer free everything! It's great.

FH and I just opened an account at WaMu a few weeks ago. So far, so good. Free checks for life is nice. Apparently we also get $.03 back on debit purchases, although I don't know the details of that. There's also free online bill pay, which we haven't tried yet. IMO choose the one that is more convenient for you to get to and has more ATMs.

We use Commerce but I would not recommend them. DH's wallet was stolen and even though I called them within 30 minutes of the theft they still allowed almost 2K to be taken out of our checking account. We got the money back, but 10 days later. It was only when we went into the branch to get him a new card did we discover that they never cancelled his debit card. It really stunk!!
