FMIL wants to wear..pants to our wedding?

I have NO problems with my FMIL, as she's always been much nicer to me than my FFIL.

Anyway my FH called me saying she was trying to get in touch with me today to see if I minded that she was buying pants to wear to our wedding. I really don't want to control what she's wearing but I'm not in love with the idea. I know our wedding is Sunday afternoon but my bridesmaids are still wearing floor length gowns and the ushers are wearing tuxes.

Should I say something? Am I overreacting?

Re: FMIL wants to wear..pants to our wedding?

FH called me months and months ago to ask me the exact same thing. I told him to tell FMIL I didn't care, as long as she was comfortable.

Guess what, she bought a dress!! I went shopping with her and grabbed every single dressy pant suit on the racks, and she tried them all on, with different tops etc. After about a dozen that didn't look good she asked if I could find a nice dress for her to try. She tried on 3 before we found the perfect dress for her.

My advice, go with the flow. Do you want her to be uncomfortable and complaining throughout the entire wedding that you forced her into a dress??

if the pants look like a dress yeah maybe but slacks no way! she might as well get a tux than.

no seriously, if she is elderly than by all means, there are alot of fancy suit type cloths out there

My mother is wearing something like that, they're straight-line pants but there's a lot of fabric so it almost looks like a floor length dress. I haven't seen it yet though so I'm not even sure what it looks like.

I would probably just go with the flow as to not start any trouble but I wouldn't be thrilled about it either.

Re: FMIL wants to wear..pants to our wedding?

i don't think you should make a big deal out of it...rather her be comfortable and happy than uncomfortable and complain all night...it a fancy suit set makes her feel beautiful and confident i don't think it should matter that she's wearing pants..because no one is going to notice what she's wearing..all eyes are going to be on you

Re: FMIL wants to wear..pants to our wedding?

Thanks. Everyone my parents think I'm crazy for not saying that it makes me a little uneasy but there are A LOT of problems right now between my family and his with money and the wedding. To me it was more symbolic than anything.

Re: FMIL wants to wear..pants to our wedding?

let her wear what she wants. IMO, beyond the BP, you can't tell people what to wear. this is a very minor thing, believe me. she should wear what she feels comfortable in.

Re: FMIL wants to wear..pants to our wedding?

My step-mom wore very a very dressy pant-suit to our wedding. The pants were black, flowy material that was sparkly. She looked great and very fancy and definitely fitted in.
So I agree that if they are fancy you shouldn't make a big deal out of it, it will be fine. If they are not fancy or you think inappropriate for a wedding, maybe you could (casually) show her some of the pics from this site or online of what other moms are wearing so she can judge for herself if she will feel uncomfortable/out of place.
