Important--Using a Credit Card on Line

My CC is a CC/Debit card. The money comes directly out of my checking. I had put a bunch of money in my checking to do so shopping for the wedding. This morning I just wanted to make sure there was enough for what I was doing today.....well there was my checking account....with nothing in it. Someone got a hold of my number and ended up changing almost $4000 on it. After they cleaned out my checking I have an overdraft and it started to clear out my savings. I am so upset we are paying for the wedding ourselves and they don't know how long until they investigate that I will get the money back they said it could take up to 210days. I will be married in about 107days. Don't know what I am going to do all the vendors want cash and no credit. Wanted to make sure you were all aware to be careful with you CC number!!!

2003wedding

I am not sure really what I did and they think it was online but it had to be from months ago. If not they think that someone got my cc number and made a cc card. They said the real pros do that.

Important--Using a Credit Card on Line

Most bank have to make all the money available to you (less $50.00 you would be responsible for) while they do the investigation. I would double check with the bank and Visa or Mastercard terms of use. Thanks for making us aware.

NEVER use your debit card online

A credit card company handles disputes differently, but if you use a debit card, or a credit card that doubles as a debit card, as Cooky can tell you, that money comes right our of your account and the process for disputing the charges is different. Something like this happened to me once, on much smaller scale. I called the customer service dept at my bank, explained the situation, and explained that I was going to bounce a check if that money wasn't there. Their 'investigation' only took about two days, which was much quicker than I thought it would be. So hopefully, Cooky, your bank is as helpful as mine was and all of your money will be available sooner than you think. Keep us all posted. Becky

Re: Important--Using a Credit Card on Line

I am so sorry for what happened to you.

I have a credit card that I use strictly for online purchases and nothing else. It has a $2,500 credit line, so God forbid someone gets a hold of it, there's not too much damage that can be done.

Stay on top of your credit card company. The should be able to settle something.

Karen

Re: GTG

My goodness I am so sorry. My FFIL was a victim of identity theft last year so I know how frustrating this is. Make sure you call all three credit reporting agencies also, have them flag your name for new activity immediately. This will protect your credit also. Experian, Equifax, and Transunion.

Re: Important--Using a Credit Card on Line

I am so sorry to hear this happened to you Cooky. Something similar happened to me with a hotel stay I had cancelled but the stupid travel agent did not cancel the res with the hotel. It was a mess! My bank is Astoria and I also used my debit card to hold the res. Astoria had me fill out a form, can't remember the name of it, but they gave me back the funds while they researched the situation. I got the $$ back from the TA so in a way I got $$ back twice. I told Astoria everything had been resolved with the TA, so Astoria took out the money that they gave me. Ever since this occurred I check my balance everyday via phone. Seems silly but you never know.

You should cancel or freeze your acct asap! Go to your branch and ask to see a summary of transactions to your account. Report your card stolen too if you haven't done so.
You should re-open a new acct with the money in savings so that it can't be touched. I hope I have helped you.

Re: Important--Using a Credit Card on Line

that is terrible, I hope they resolve this soon for you. This happened to someone I work w. too, although I dont know how long they took to resolve it. I cancelled my debit card after hearing that, since I never used it anyway. I hope your bank can straighten this out, you may want to get legal advice to make sure that your credit is not affected, and that the bank refunds your money in a timely manner. Good luck.
