VENT: Why don't doctors leave open appointments for people who are sick?!?!

Patient: Hi, I'd like to make an appointment... I'm sick...

Receptionist: The doctor can see you a week from tomorrow...

WHY DON'T THEY LEAVE APPOINTMENTS OPEN FOR PATIENTS WHO, I DON'T KNOW..... GET SICK!?!?!??!?!?!?!

usually they do make time for it...but you have to call early in the morning. sometimes my daughter would be really sick and i'd just drive over and walk-in...they won't ignore you and say go away then...they make you wait and aren't happy...but you get seen.

I hate doctors its like they only have time for you when its convient for them.
Did you tell them your symptoms, Sarah? If they're still acting stupid, go to a walk-in place.

My favourite was this one:

Me: Hi I was having severe headaches and chills last night & can barely stand today
Them: Ok we can see you in
Me: Can she see me today? DH took off work to drive me there & I really feel awful
Them: If you feel that badly go to the emergency room
Me: I'll need my medical records
Them: for what?
Me: My new doctor..you guys are so fired.

Dr's!!!!!!!!!! Yeesh - sometimes all that money goes to their freakin' head!!!!!! I'd call back and demand an immediate appt or ask for a referral b/c you shouldn't wait a week!

unfortunately, the usual response is:

'if you're THAT sick, please go to the E.R.'

I find it hilarious that I have to make an appt. with my GYN six months in advance.

my office has open hours DAILY for walk-in ill patients... it's Dr. Franco, Dr. Belding, Dr. Gleason and Dr. Dragone (also, two nurse practitioners Mona and Kevin) and a new Dr. O'Brian. They are all fantastic and no matter what, even if I don't go to the walk-in hours in the morning I can ALWAYS call and get an appt. with the NP... I can't say enough good things about this office Sarah, it's been my office, my grandparents and my parent's office pretty much my whole life-- and a good part of theirs. They are in Smithtown on Brooksite Dr. They take SO many insurances so you should be safe-- good luck, HTH!!!!!

I feel your pain. I recently felt really sick, my blood pressure was 80 over 40!!! And I had a fever. I went to my medical center at work and found this out, and when I called my doctor they gave me the whole 'he can see you next Tuesday.' I told them everything I found out at the medical center, and they still wouldn't fit me in. She said 'well, maybe we can squeeze you in on Friday.' Even the medical center offered to call to get me in, and explain the situation. They just don't care! At least at my doctor ...

and when you do have an appt, they are ALWAYS late. just once I would like to get in on time.

My doc takes me whenever I call. He's the man! But I have experienced it the other way too.

I USED to have a doctor... notice the word USED TO... who my mom called when I passed out one night (at about 8pm) for no apparent reason. Just fell to the floor and passed out in our living room. My mom called the answering service and they paged him. He called my mom back and she frantically told him I passed out, and he said, 'Um... this number is for emergencies only...'

CAN YOU IMAGINE. We immediately stopped going to him.

Now it's hard to even try to go to doctors on lunch breaks or whatever because there's NO WAY you'll be in an out in an hour. Isn't there a way for them to schedule better so everyone doesn't have to wait forever to get in? whew... I feel better now!

Unfortunately I think all Doctors offices are going to hell with themselves. I used to work in them for years and I have seen what really goes on behind the scenes.. so I know that they could be treating their patients much better.... It's sad actually.. the doctors get away with murder.. well the ones I worked with anyway..
