Wedding Planning/First Year Teaching- NOT a good combination!

Anyone else in their first year teaching AND planning a wedding at the same time?!?!

How are you handling it? The idea that the wedding is pulling my focus from the job is killing me. I keep telling myself- focus on job, it's more important. But the wedding planning is fun and exciting!!! And it's so addicting to just stay on here and get more ideas and advice!!!

I thought I had planned one day (luckily I'm a music teacher and can pull things out of a hat pretty easily)....and then I looked at it and went, ooops!! I planned for chorus when it's general music today! So I had to come up with something quick! And one day I walked in and realized, I hadn't planned my 4th grade period today. Like I said, I am LUCKY I can pull things out of a hat being a music teacher- there's always the tried and true songs and lessons and games. But I don't want to be this kind of teacher!!!

Anyone else going through this frustration? How do you find a balance? Do I just have to kick my butt into shape and keep myself off of this website?!?!

Not in my first year, but recent building change (have to switch buildings during the day). Rough schedule this year, luckily the wedding is in 21 days... Just pace yourself, set realistic goals. Make appointments during vacations.

Re: Wedding Planning/First Year Teaching- NOT a good combination!

I feel for you, girl! I am in my fifth year of teaching but it's turning out to be a very demanding year for me, as well! I teach Kindergarten. Remember to keep things balanced...delegate wedding things (like phone calls, etc.) to someone you trust, and get help at school from your mentor (if you have one), and the other teachers in the department. In my first few years, everyone told me, 'don't re-invent the wheel': there are always other teachers who have great lessons that work...use them!!! Good luck, and FM me anytime to vent!!
Enjoy both...try not to let the stress get to you!!!!

Re: Wedding Planning/First Year Teaching- NOT a good combination!

I'm a first year teacher as well.

Honestly, I haven't even really thought about the wedding since school started. I have more time than you do... but I made sure to have all of my major stuff booked before the school year started. I really only come on this site on the weekends. A few phone calls that needed to be made, I asked my mom to do.

Your wedding is important, but it's only one day, and your career is your future. I don't know about how things are at your school, but they definitely keep a close eye on new teachers where I work, and I really don't want to screw this up.

Re: Wedding Planning/First Year Teaching- NOT a good combination!

yes! last year was my first year and i got engaged on Dec. 23, so it was a little less than half way through the year. Wedding planning is more fun than lesson planning. I tried to do all my wedding stuff on the weekends. Its hard at first, but once you find whats right for you, you manage.
