Shopping for a fridge... any recommendations ?

Shopping for household appliances reminds me of shopping for a car ! You dont know what the difference is from one to the other and the salesman will sell you ANYTHING ! Basically what we are looking for is a simple, small fridge. We are redoing our downstairs kitchen completely, from ceiling to floor, and being that its a pretty small kitchen (9x9), we dont want anything too bulky in the room. (made that mistake with my bedroom!). Unfortunately it seems like there are no savings on smaller fridges. they cost the same if not more than the huge ones. We looked at PC Richards and have not compared prices to anyone else yet. Anyone have sugggestions on where to get a good deal, good fridge ? We saw one at BJ's, I liked the fact that it was SMALL but I never heard of the brand, i think it was Haiers ? Any feedback is welcome :) Thanks! Hey- am I the only one posting lately ? LOL.

Shopping for a fridge... any recommendations ?

I`m going shopping for appliances in a few weeks. I plan on signing up with Consumer reports online (it`s $4) for the month. You can search all appliances (and lots of other stuff) and get feedback on them. I would definitely start there for which to buy and then just shop around! Good luck!

Try Sears. I have a Kenmore and I love it, plus they're reliable and have a good reputation. I heard that even though Kenmore is Sears' brand, it's made by one of the big manufacturers, but of course I can't remember. I think it's GE. You can ask the salesman when you go. (The reason I don't know the answer for sure is because I didn't shop for my fridge (and I'm the question queen, so I would have found out), my MIL bought it for my shower, so I didn't even get to pick it out -- she knew that I wanted a Kenmore, but I would have wanted a bigger one inside, although this one is fine.) Good luck!

Shopping for a fridge... any recommendations ?

We just bought a new one. We did lots of research, asked around, comparison shopped, etc., and finally ended up with a Kitchenaid. It's a side by side with an ice and water dispenser on the door. It's not huge, but I don't know the exact dimensions. We were very limited as to size because our cabinets are designed to have the refrigerator slide right into them. We compared prices at Sears, Best Buy, PC Richards, and Smithtown Appliance, and found that Sears gave us the best deal. We ended up paying just slightly higher than cost. So far it's great and we love it. : ) Good luck!

Thanks for the info girls. JennRenee-were you able to haggle at Sears ? (just wondering because I was told that at PC Richards you have to speak up and haggle to get a deal). The side-by-side with the water/ice is my husbands FAVORITE (but when we redo our upstairs kitchen) its a bigger kitchen. I just read that that side-by-sides use more energy and the freezer is less roomy. I have a sbs now, but without the water/ice. I like that style regardless of what they say, lol. Febbride-thats a great idea, consumer reports! thanks. Bearsbabe, we'll try Sears this week :) Off on a tangent... Its amazing how many things out there are made by the big brands and you would never know it. I worked in Lingerie a few years ago, in a buying office, so we knew exactly who made what. and the same company that makes Victoria Secrets Lingerie makes lingerie for Target. yep. They told me themselves :) so we shouldnt be fooled by the price tag and the brand name all the time. even tho thats hard when certain brands become our favorites..ugh, marketing... Thanks for listening to me ramble ! :) anna

Kenmore made by Whirlpool!

Kenmore appliances are actually made by Whirlpool. Our old fridge died last summer and we had to get a new one. We were told that by the saleman from Sears when we noticed that the Kenmore refrigerator we liked looked exactly the same as a Whirlpool. We ended up getting our new refrigerator (Whirlpool) from Best Buy because they could deliver the next day. Sears couldn't deliver for a week. Also Best Buy had a service contract for only $39.00 that covers in full for 5 years. A serviceman comes once a year to service the refrigerator and it also covers any problems in full for that same 5 years. We don't usually buy service contracts, but in this case it was so inexpensive we decided to do it.

Side by Side

We bought one from Sears. Didn't haggle but they did match best buys price and delivered it free. Its a GE 24 or 25 cubic foot side by side with ice and water. It has plenty of freezer room and we even could fit our turkey in the slide out drawer. (everyone said we would be able to!) However I like having the extra freezer in the basement for stock piling frozen goods anyway. We got the icemaker mainly with parties in mind, and in that respect its not all its cracked up to be. Once that tub is empty, there is noway you can be able to keep up with the demand for ice. So in the future I would have to ziplock bag it myself and store in the basement or something. But for regular use its very convenient- no ice trays!

Shopping for a fridge... any recommendations ?

the energy ratings do not compare. We bought the RCA since it was so much cheaper than the GE. It had a small cosmetic difference on the handles. The money we saved up front is now spent on the utility bill. Be sure to check the rating. We got all our appliances from Granado in Valley Stream. My family has used them forever. If you do not live nearby, find the model and call them for a price. They deliver all over the island. Deal with Greg. He is the one on the Granado commercials. Happy shopping!

If anyone is still looking --

We just got our new fridge delivered today. GE Profile Stainless Steel freezer on the bottom (drawer). I love it! We ended up getting it at PC Richard in Bellmore. Better price than Sears and delivery the next day!

Lee -Stainless

I heard these really show fingerprints and you have to use a special cleaner. How have you found it to be?

Stainless

So far so good. The fingerprints do tend to show, but not as bad as I thought they would...my husband keeps reminding me 'That's why they call it STAIN-LESS steel'...thank you very much! You do need to get Stainless Steel cleaner - which I used after it was delivered. Takes a little elbow grease but shines it up real nice. It's only been a few days but I absolutely love it!!
