Anyone doing DIY Unity Candle?

Where did you buy it? What personal touches did you add?

I'm thinking I'll just buy candles from a craft store, get pretty candle holders, and add a bow or some sort of decoration...

Have any pictures?

Re: Anyone doing DIY Unity Candle?

i did a memorial candle.

i bought an off-white candle at ikea (dh works there... discount) printed what i wanted on vellum. attached the vellum the way a lable is on a bottle of water (adhered to itself on the back) then i put ribbon around the 'edge' of the vellum to hide the seam

Re: Anyone doing DIY Unity Candle?

I did one. I bought my stuff at MICHAELS craft store- our colors are bright-basically the colors found in gerber daises-our main flower; hot pink, red, orange and bright yellow.

You can see the pics in my album.

I never thought to get the candles at Ikea! I love that place too, and they're probably much less expensive than a craft store. Thanks for that idea!

Re: Anyone doing DIY Unity Candle?

I saw this pic and fell in love. So easy to make too. You can put whatever you want where the square is. www.tamisplace.com has all the swarovski crystals and they are inexpensive.

Libby,
I am afraid if I do it myself it will catch on fire. How can you avoid that? Also, where do you get vellum from Michaels?

Thanks,
Jen

you don't have to worry about it catching on fire because the candle will not be lit that long. a unity/memorial candle is usually made from a pillar candle. this means that they are thick/wide, which means that they take a lot longer to burn down.

if you're still worried, i would buy a pillar candle. with a magic marker, mark off where you would like the top of your decoration to go, then light the candle. this way you can check how long before the candle burns down that far.

another tip, buy a 'dripless' candle. they are a little more expensive than the 'regular' candles, but they only melt in the inside, the outside does not melt or distort the shape.

your second question: vellum. how much vellum do you plan to use? if you're going to use a lot, i would go to staples and look in their paper section. they have laser and ink jet vellum. so it won't matter what kind of printer you have.

if you only need a sheet or two, fm me, i have some left over. you can have some.

Re: Anyone doing DIY Unity Candle?

Here is a pic of my DIY unity candle...I think I may do it over differently though......
(Hopefully the pic works)

I glued a piece of rose print paper to the candle and put the vellum over that (with the printing on it)

Re: Anyone doing DIY Unity Candle?

Whoah I guess we're really untraditional -chuckles- I based mine off a candle I saw in Michaels Wedding Crafts Book.

No vellum to be seen...

Someone better get the smelling salts for my female family members..

Re: Anyone doing DIY Unity Candle?

I will be making one as well. Bought the candles at Michaels too. I will be doing something similar with the vellum too. It is very easy to make!
