I would say you can do it about 2-3 months before..

mine was 1 month before. i think it was june 10 and my wedding was july 8

I had two showers, one was four months before, the other was one month before.

my friends have generally been 2 months before, but my cousins was almost 4 months before because she was studying for the Barr. It all depends on your schedule and personal preference. If you want it to be a big surprise though, I'd do it early.
