DIY flowers versus a florist

Is it better to hire a florist, even though I am seeing that prices are really high, or is it possible and less crazy to do them yourself? I know places to get 2 dozen roses for around $10-$14, how difficult would it be to make the BOKs, Coursages, and CPs?

anyone have any experience with this that could give me advice? thanks

Re: DIY flowers versus a florist

myself and my mom are doing all our flowers

I used silk flowers because they are a lot cheaper and you can usually fond them on sale at the end of the season

we just looked at pictures and use ideas from them to make ours look somewhat professional

are these fresh roses?

if that's the route you're thinking about... you have to keep in mind TIME. fresh flowers can not keep for very long, this means they have to be done the day before or the day of the wedding. do you really want to be making cp's on your wedding day?

i'm not trying to talk you out of it, just 'giving you the facts, ma'am'.

if you decide to go with silks, then you don't have to worry about time, because you can make them ahead of time. just make sure that you cover them so they don't get dusty. the only thing about silks is that you'll be going without the scent of fresh cut flowers. i don't know if that means much to you, but to many brides that's the reason they don't do it.

good luck

Re: DIY flowers versus a florist

I was thinking about DIYing it for a while, but ended up with a florist just because I didn't think putting together the centerpeices is what I would want to be doing the night before the wedding. I did find a website though that has bulk flowers -
www.flowerbud.com - which seems a bit pricey, but when compared to a florist would definitely save you $$.

Re: DIY flowers versus a florist

I can tell you from experience, because I did ALL of the bouquets, boutineeres, and corsages for my brother's wedding (and I was a bridesmaid) that NO amount of $$$ in the world will make up for the aggrevation. I missed his night before the wedding get together completely (as did my poor husband because I was exhausted and overtired and things weren't coming out 'just right' so he stayed home w/ me for moral support) . I was up until 3:30 in the morning and then you have to dedicate an entire fridge to your flowers (depending on how many you're doing) because otherwise they're going to wilt and look like garbage in the morning.
Either do silk flowers or have a florist do them- I know the $ seems like a lot (again from experience) but after your wedding is over at least you'll look back and not remember how much you spent, you'll just remember that they were done and how beautiful they were. Hope that helps!

Re: DIY flowers versus a florist

I'm still debating if i should do my own. If you do choose that route-- check out 28th Street between 7th and 6th ave. in the city. it's the whole sale flower district. the street is full of florists. 24 roses for 10 bucks--and they are FRESH!
