grrrrrrr.... FMIL, superstitions, and the flowergirl dress

why MUST I placate her? She says black is 'bad luck' for a wedding and refuses to permit her granddaughter to wear an ivory dress with a black sash when she's our flowergirl.

I swear there's no negotiating, and I don't want to put my FSIL in the awkward situation of ordering the dress against her mother's wishes. She's making me pick a different colored sash

Re: grrrrrrr.... FMIL, superstitions, and the flowergirl dress

that is REDICULOUS.
I swear, people are so annoying. SO ANNOYING!
Pardon me for being ignorant, but what is symbolic of bad luck? Is it the black sash? The ivory?
HELllllooooooo????????? Its 2007! Not 2000BC........
white washes a lot of people out.....and 50% of weddings are BLACK TIE.
Well, if it makes you feel any better.....well....I won't even get into what my in laws wore to my wedding. Too much typing.

one more thing.....
THis is why you can't involve the FMIL.
THankfully, you got it with something minor.
She has lost her opportunity to be involved, and now cannot have a say in anything. She's fired.

Re: grrrrrrr.... FMIL, superstitions, and the flowergirl dress

yeah, I sort of DIDN'T involve her..... I guess my FSIL told my FMIL about the dress, and then she intervened.

FMIL is soooooo superstitious. She has all of these idiotic rules.... sigh. I just don't want FSIL to be in the line of fire, since she's the one ordering the dress, and FMIL obviously knows this already.

we looked through FH's brother's wedding pics, and there were several people wearing black... including me.

I'm really freaking out becuase my BM's are wearing ivory and black and I don't want an 'incident' on our big day.

OY VAY.
I don't want to intervene.....but I had a very similar issue.
My only words to you are this....and you have to do this with descretion....and really read the situation.....
BUT.....
You will be very surprised about the power of the word "NO."

WIth the word NO, there are no explanations, no questions, no interpretations. Just NO. you don't even need to explain.
Say it nicely....say it calmly......it is a very powerful word, and you will be surprised how when used properly, how powerful and liberating it can be.

Y
