Question on tanning salons

I just called a local salon to make an appt, and I was told that the beds that have give only UVA rays, so you won't get burned - it that possible?! Can't you still get burned it you're in there for too long?

Also, stupid question, but should I wear sunblock my first time, just in case I am sensitive to the rays? I'm so paranoid of burning!!

Thanks

Re: Question on tanning salons

I don't know a hell of a lot about tanning salons but I have been a few times in the past few weeks to get some color.

We are probably close to the same white as I uspigmentation - YOU WILL GET BURNED if you stay in for too long.

Go today and get a 15 minutes session. You will be a little red. Maybe go another time later this week. But don't go too close to the wedding - you want to give your redness some time to get brown.

Ill probably go one more time this week and thats it - but i have gone a few times already in the past few months. I don't have a "tan" - Im just not as porcelain ed to be.

Re: Question on tanning salons

Oh and don't wear sunblock - unless you want to prevent color on your face or something.

Re: Question on tanning salons

I used to tan all the time and YES that is true.
You dont use suntan lotion, you will not burn if you use the better beds.

Re: Question on tanning salons

It depends what beds you use, alot of salons have great beds now that only give off uva rays.
I am very white and go in those before I go on vacation and sit for an hour and come out tan not red.
You WILl Not burn in these beds.
There are cheaper beds that are different ( the old coffin looking ones) those BURN, those you wouldnt want to lay in for more than 15-20 minutes.

You get whatcha pay for I guess

Re: Question on tanning salons

Being a indoor tanning freak, I have the following advice,

like Stef said, go once in the bed and try it out.. don't put on any lotions.. they are accelerators and you can really damage your skin because your skin is soo fresh..try a standup bed if they have one.. if you do burn, you won't burn as bad as being ona bed that you have to lay down on..

the day after next go back, if you hadn't burned the day before, I suggest you then use a BRONZING lotion, make sure you tell the girl you do not want any of the tingling lotions..

make sure to rub it in so you get it on evenly... and if you are on a stand up make sure to bring your arms down every other minute or so, so that your outer arms get color as well..IMPORTANT, if it's a lay down bed, make sure to raise your arms over your head so that you color your inner arms.. if you're wearing a strapless, thye white inner arms looks terrible..

Re: Question on tanning salons

Thanks everyone - I'm off to the salon this evening. I'm neurotic so I'm only going for 10-15 mins my first time. I have pale Irish skin that burns easily, even with my base tan from the summer.

I'll let you know how I made out

Re: Question on tanning salons

If you have pale skin, I wouldnt even go 15 minutes. That might be too long. The first time I went, they recommended me going 7 minutes, then slowly increasing my time. So I dont burn too much
Have fun.

Re: Question on tanning salons

I wanted to do that - I don't care if I don't get any color this time since I have 2 weeks, but they say it's 20 min sessions - so I'll have to pay for 20 I guess and then get out after 10!

Re: Question on tanning salons

I'm in Mineola - the salon I was referred to was UltraTan in Carle Place.

I figured I'd ask when I got there if I can only pay for 10 mins - but I don't think so...no biggie.

Re: Question on tanning salons

I would try to find a place where you can pay by minutes. I bought a package, and wound up being cheaper.

Re: Question on tanning salons

I have to go now but, I suggest you look for a local place (not that Utra tan chain) look for Beach Bum or Hollywood Tans those are usually teh best and you can get a great deal.. I'm sure Merrick is too out of the way but I go to Heatwave tanning on MErrick Avenue and they have great packages and their beds are great!

Re: Question on tanning salons

Update - After all of this I never went tanning this weekend! LOL

MarcellaBella - you recommend Hollywood tan? I wonder if there are any near me. Merrick is about 20 mins away from me, but I'd prefer to find out near my home or by work.

I'll keep looking though - I need to go asap....I officially have 13 days left!
