Do I have to do a unity candle lighting?

We're having a catholic ceremony and I was wondering if I have to do a candle lighting. I'm not a big fan of fire. It makes me nervous. I can picture myself falling and lighting myself on fire. Does else everyone have one?

I am not doing a unity candle at my ceremony. I am just not into it- do whatever makes you guys happy.

Well we did the unity candle for our ceremony and what a nightmare. First it didn't want to light then when it did the candles just kept falling and didn't want to stay up. I can't wait to see the un-edited version of my video since everybody was laughing when that kept happening.

It is really up to you. I first wanted to do it because it looked really nice when I saw it in other weddings but it just didn't work out for me. If I hd to make that choice again I would personally leave it out.

I am also having a Catholic Ceremony and I am not doing a Unity Candle. It is not part of the Catholic Ceremony, it is more of a secular tradition that many people incorporate into their ceremonies.

I don't think we're doing a unity candle lighting. The priest didn't mention it.

The unity candle lighting is part of the Catholic tradition only if you are having a full mass. If you are only having the ceremony then there is no candle lighting. You do not have to have it. It is up to you & your FI.

Can you have a unity candle if you are NOT having a mass? When would this be?

I would check with your priest but the unity candle is only in the mass, but he maybe able to position it sometime before the end of the ceremony.

I am only having a ceremony, my Deacon will allow the candle, however, I do not think I am doing it.

The unity candle is actually a very recent addition to the Catholic Ceremony and is not required at all. You can do it whether you have a mass or not...or you don't have to do it at all.

Some churchs have different rules for the mass and the ceremony. If you want it (if you are having a mass or ceremony), I would just check with the priest marrying you, but you do not need to have it.

Glad this topic was started. I was thinking about not doing it. I am having an informal ceremony.

I went to a wedding a couple of weeks ago, and it was not done. It wasn't missed at all.

It's your wedding!! Why would you have to do anything you don't want to?

I am having a full mass and doing the unity candle. Our parents will light the candles first and them FH and I will light the unity candle.

We did the Rose Ceremony instead. You exchange roses as your first gift to each other. Everyone thought it was lovely. I got the text from this website and my minister loved it- do a search if your interested.

i didn't do it, wasn't my style, I did an offering of roses to the blessed mother in honor of our late grandmothers instead, or you can do nothing at all.

I am not, we are getting married outside...if it is windy then there really is no point! I know that they are not that much money but I would rather spend the money on something else!

We are getting married outside also but I really want to do it so I am trying to figure out a way to do it. Maybe we'll light it when we go into the reception instead maybe before our first dance.

We are getting married outside as well but i think we are going to still do it using a hurricane to block for wind! I think it is your day so do whatver you like =)!
