Save-A-Pet Seeks Help for Badly Burned Dog Left to Die

Donations are needed to help "Maximus," a mix breed who was chained to a tree, doused with gasoline and set on fire this past week. The badly burned animal was taken to the Veterinary Medical Center of Long Island for emergency care by a concerned resident.

Maximus has 2nd and 3rd degree burns over 60% of his body and so far he has already incurred over $3,000 in medical expenses. However, his vet and Dori Scofield, Founder/Director of Save-A-Pet Animal Rescue believe his chances for survival are good.

Despite his terrible ordeal and the brutality he has endured, Maximus appears to hold no grudges and is alert and friendly to everyone at the VMCLI, wagging his tail and licking the staff caring for him.

"We can't allow such horrific crimes to be committed against our companion animals. Although Maximus has made progress, he needs a great deal of treatment and has a long road of recovery ahead," according to Ms. Scofield. With love and proper medical care, Scofield is hopeful that Save-A-Pet will be able to find a forever home for Maximus.

Maximus was found in Brentwood, but neither his owners or the perpetrators have been found.

Save-A-Pet Animal Rescue and Veterinary Medical Center of Long Island, regret to announce the passing of Maximus, the two-year-old pit bull mix who was chained to a fence and burned in a horrific act of animal cruelty, last Thursday evening (July 12) in Brentwood.

Maximus suffered burns to more than 60 percent of his body, leaving his skin raw and his outlook grim. Maximus succumbed to his injuries early this morning at the Veterinary Medical Center in West Islip.

"Our entire staff and Maximus' physician Linda Loudon made every effort to save him." Dr. Reed Zaroff, owner of the Veterinary Medical Center of Long Island, said. "Everyone at the Veterinary Medical Center of Long Island was shocked by this crime and heartbroken at the loss of Maximus."

Maximus passed away shortly after 12 a.m. today, Dr. Loudon said.

"The trauma was too much for Maximus to handle," Dr. Loudon said.

Maximus was brought to the Veterinary Medical Center of Long Island last Thursday by the Town of Islip Animal Shelter, which was contacted by a concerned citizen. Loudon contacted Save-A-Pet Animal Rescue and Adoption, located in Port Jefferson Station, which agreed to assist the medical center in funding Maximus' treatment. From that time until his passing, the Maximus had been under the constant care of the staff at the Veterinary Medical Center of Long Island.

You know...i really hope there is a special place in hell for people like that...you have to have absolutely no conscience to be able to do something like that to a living thing.

I'd like to see people like this, who are caught, be thrown into a den with a lion who hasn't been fed for a week...try abusing that animal!! Poor dog...

i'm going to donate-- hopefully the money will help other animals in the future.

That is so sad. They need to find that person. They should not be walking the streets. Thank goodness for places like save-a-pet.

Not to mention they cant charge any of the people who did it! That poor dog! I swear I am hating people right now. I mean how sick can you possibly be!

I am such a big dog lover and seeing this on the news last night absolutely disgusted me!!! I can't believe someone can be that mean. I always say people that committ such horrible crimes to people and animals should endure that same pain!! I am sorry but it really makes me mad!!!

I can't believe Maximum passed on Hearing about this kind of stuff breaks my heart. I know he's in a better place right now and he's no longer suffering.

That is terrible. I feel so sick inside after seeing that on the news. I'm a huge dog lover and can't imagine how someone would want to hurt a poor, defenseless animal. I hope they find whoever was responsible for this and that they get what they deserve. Too often I hear about people abusing animals and getting away with a little slap on the wrist.

I am a pet mommy of 4 chihuahua's and i am just so sick over this story! i hope these people get caught and become prosecuted!

I'm so upset to hear he didn't make it but I'm glad he's not suffering anymore.

OMG, It takes a coward to hurt an animal or child. I really hope this person is caught, but the punishment will never fit the crime.

The laws need to change for today's crimes. I'd like to be alone in a room with this person.

I'm not even a dog lover, and I just got so angry and upset reading this email that I am fuming. It amazes me how disgusting some people are. I hope that whoever did this is punished by dying in a similar way.
Sometimes I have NO FAITH in people. Doing this to an animal, or any living creature for that matter, is unforgivable and deplorable.
I hope this person rots in hell.

People like that dont deserve to live. I was praying for that dog. How could someone do that? How would they like it if it happened to them? I hope they have no luck in their future. really breaks my heart. At least he is in heaven and away from trash like that.

I just read this story in Newsday on my lunch hour today. I am so sorry to hear he passed. At least he is not in pain anymore.

It sickens me to hear what crazy people there are in this world that can hurt an innocent animal and torture them like this. I get so disguisted when I hear of these heinous acts. The peole who do these terrible things to animals such as this incident deserve to suffer just like the animal does (in my opinion). It's just terrible.

I hate to say it but sometimes I just care so much more for animals than humans b/c humans can control and help themselves animals are nothing without humans. Humans control their own destiny, an animal doesn't. So sad...
