FH refuses to get it anywhere else than at the NYC clerk's office

You can get it at any town or city hall in the entire state of NY. It does not matter where at all, so just go to a town hall that's most convenient hours-wise to you and your FH. Just remember though, when you decide on which one to go to, call them and ask them what ID you need and the cost and in what form they need the money. Every office is different.

That's where we got ours. I work downtown so that was easiest. Dh works in midtown so he came down at lunch. It wasn't bad at all actually, I was surprised. Quick and easy.

For this one it's your Driver's license or passport, as long as it's one form of govt issued ID, and a $35 money order....money order ONLY so make sure you get that before you go. You wait on line to get in the building for security reasons, but it's not bad, don't get worried when you see the line outside. Then you just go right upstairs. Here's the hours:
