Gatsby Wedding!! Ideas PLEASE!!!!!

Hey everyone.. I'm getting married in April 2009 and we found a mansion in Newport, RI for the reception. It's actually where the movie The Great Gatsby was filmed, so I thought it would be a fun idea to have the theme of the wedding be The Great Gatsby.. but I'm having trouble coming up with ideas.. Invites, favors, centerpieces etc.. Any help would be appreciated!!!!!!

Xoxo

Laura (VintageGirl) did a vintage inspired wedding. You might want to check out her review. It wasn't as 'themey' but had elements of the art deco period throughout. LOVED her STDs.

Get Stylish With a Great Gatsby Wedding Theme
Author: Brides.tv Staff

Calla lilies have a beauty and grace that have inextricably intertwined the lovely flower with brides of elegant distinction. Entire books have been devoted to using the calla lily as a wedding theme for decorations and bouquets. The flower's gracefully curving petals and delicate green leaves have made it popular in art and design for decades, particularly in Art Deco designs and items. One very popular wedding theme that suits the calla lily is a Gatsby wedding theme with decor and style drawn straight from the Roaring 20s.

Elegance and exuberance are the key ingredients in a Gatsby wedding theme. The wail of the saxophone and the syncopated rhythms of a jazz quartet are the perfect background music for the lush luxury of an era that featured mimosas for breakfast and tuxedoes for dinner.

Choose sleek black, white and silver as colors for a classic Gatsby wedding theme. Soften it just a little with a hint of baby-soft pink satin. If you're daring, choose chic black dresses for your attendants, accented with diamond clips at the shoulder or bodice. Let each carry one perfect calla lily tied with a lavish pink satin bow - and contrast it with the full dozen of your own bouquet, bound with a silvery white ribbon.

Suit your attire to the calla lily wedding theme with a sleek, elegant silk sheath with dramatic lines that bare your shoulders and back if you dare. Wear your hair in a chic upsweep, caught with a wreath of stephanotis, or tuck baby's breath into tresses twined in a braided bun. A dramatic diamond choker with a glittering pendant that rests against the hollow of your throat is the perfect jewelry accent to recall the glittering Gatsby days.

Decorate your hall with elegant black, white and silver as well. Snowy white tablecloths with crisp napkins edged in black satin are the perfect backdrop for sparkling crystal and silver flatware. Instead of the traditional 'single calla lily in a tall vase', wrap a sleek, black vase with a silver ribbon to hold a full dozen of the grace, curling lilies.

The perfect centerpiece of a Gatsby wedding - aside from the bride, of course! - is a champagne fountain built around a glistening ice sculpture. The elegant lines of a calla lily would make a beautiful centerpiece to a table with a pair of glittering fountains and pyramids of glittering champagne glasses, but there are other Art Deco icons that would suit the Gatsby wedding theme as well. A pair of frolicking dolphins rendered in crystalline purity and surrounded by a pool of sparkling champagne would add the ideal touch of elegant decadence to capture the essence of the era.

There are dozens of wonderful wedding favor ideas that fit right in with a Roaring 20s Great Gatsby wedding theme. A Tiffany-inspired trinket box with a stained glass calla lily can be filled with white pillow mints or Jordan almonds and wrapped in a circle of tulle. Or choose a crystal bud vase sculpted in the shape of a calla lily, encircled with a silver ribbon.

By all means, invite your guests to join in the fun by dressing the part. Just note on the invitations that your wedding is a trip back to an era of decadent luxury, formal dress and fun!

OLD HOLLYWOOD GLAMOUR
(from ABOUT.com)
An Elegant and Fun Wedding Theme
What person doesn't want to feel like a movie star? A Hollywood glamour wedding theme will help you feel just that way, and give an elegant and fun style to your wedding as well. Think about old-fashioned Hollywood, and the excitement of the red carpet. After all, if there's any day you should act like a star, it's your wedding day!

ATTIRE:

Bride: Look for bias-cut dresses with v-necks and fish-tail hems. Designers to look at include Jenny Packham, Badgley Mischka, Amy Michaelson, and Monique Lhuillier. Satin is a classic fabric, and chandelier earrings are a must.

Groom: Black tie or white tie – go for the classic Fred Aistaire look, complete with sharp, pressed clothes and neat haircut.

Groomsmen: Black tie or simple one-button dark suits.

Wedding Colors Silver, white, black, and blush pink.

FLOWERS: You'll want to look for classic flowers, such as roses, peonies, and lilies. Try arrangements composed of just one flower, such as all rose bridesmaids' bouquets, or an elegant bunch of calla lilies for the bride. Consider wearing a flower in your hair for that

MUSIC: A swing band is perfect for this type of wedding. You could also hire a dance instructor to teach your guests how to do the lindy hop and the Charleston – perhaps at the rehearsal dinner.

INVITATIONS: Look for ones that echo your theme, such as these, these, or these.

SETTING: An old art deco movie theater, particularly if it has a large lobby, is a perfect setting. If you don’t have one of these in your town, look for an old-fashioned formal restaurant or supper club, like the 21 Club, or a grand ballroom at a hotel.

TRANSPORTATION: Drive away in a vintage Rolls Royce Phantom convertible. Or, just enjoy being chauffeured in a limousine.

SPECIAL TOUCHES Name your tables after classic Hollywood stars, or romantic movies. Give your bridesmaids high quality feather boas. Consider wearing a feather and rhinestone hair accessory, a la Josephine Baker. If you're renting your dance floor, ask for black and white checkered.

Re: Gatsby Wedding!! Ideas PLEASE!!!!!

You can always do 'elements of' without actually doing the 'costume effect' if you want it to be more subtle. there's another woman on this site that is doing an art deco theme wedding. I forget her name. if I find her posts I'll link you because she's wonderfully artistic and might be able to help you hash out ideas.

Some I had were:

Your dress. Look at photos of dresses in the twenties era because I think that will be the most recognizable and let you play most.

Think of sending out a save the date and invites that are in that theme (again ill try to find out that woman's name for you here). Like you can do a black an white theme as someone else suggested and maybe take a photo of you and your hubby to be in sepia or b&w that looks old fashioned.

I found a link that mentioned roaring twenties/gatsby theme. This is the part about Gatsby but I'll inserrt the link anway because it has great info and links about styles of dresses and other things about the era.

Hope it helps.

OH! One more thing. That movie- So Lovely? Not sure if it was twenties but it had the elegant feel to it if you have your heart set on gatsby. Think elegance. Alot of candles, romance. Colors should be white and gold or white and silver-very light and just upscale.

Great Gatsby Theme
The approach to the room sets the mood for a Gatsby Affair with white panels accented with sparkling twinkle lights and green ivy. You can have your guest enter through an arched lattice gazebo outlined with miniature lights, decorated with baskets of impatiens. You could have white garden lights hang around the room to enhance the mood. Surrounding the room with baskets of flowers and ficus trees in clay pots. On the tables you can have fish bowls with live goldfish as centerpieces or candles set in tall candelabras or cut glass bowls with geometric pyramids of fruit or maybe Art deco style lamps. And you might have strands of pearls and red bows for napkin rings. You might want to sprinkle fresh rose petals around the tops of each table.

Use an Art Deco typeface for the invitations and programs, straight-silhouetted '20s-inspired gowns, tuxedos and top hats, table decor of rich satins and sterling silver and music from a jazz/swing band.
