PETS AND NEW HOMES.. stupid question

IF you moved into a new home and already had pets, was it a hard transition on the dogs to move to a new home? i heard sometimes this is a problem for dogs..?

Re: PETS AND NEW HOMES.. stupid question

I only have a cat and I was VERY worried about this. The experts recommend that you move the pets last, have their food/water and potty areas all set up and showing the animal(s) the entire house. Then limit their movements for a while. For instance, I keep ALL doors shut when I am not home except the bedroom door (where her litter box is, and she sleeps on our bed so I cannot cut her off from that stuff). Beemer can go into the LR, Kitchen, DR and master bedroom. That's it.

I also made sure her bed was all set up before I brought her to the new house and I was home for 3 days with her. I think if you just leave the next day it could be very difficult for them.

It is a bit of a transition, but I also think it depends on the animal. Beemer is used to going to my MILs during the holidays so she is used to sleeping at 'new' places. That helped us a bit, I think. After a few days she got a bit antsy, I think she was ready to 'go home' at that point, but she is fine now. I just made her feel very secure during the antsy times.

When I was a kid and we moved, our dog knew immediately somehow that this was our new home and we had no problems.

Re: PETS AND NEW HOMES.. stupid question

We just recently moved into a new home and at first Madaket (our English Bulldog) seemed OK but then last week she stared getting the runs so I took her to the vet and he said it was probably stress related. He gave her some meds and we fed her white rice with her food and she is doing much better now. Just make sure you keep an eye on them.

Edited to add: She tends to be very attached to us and gets upset very easily.

Re: PETS AND NEW HOMES.. stupid question

I don't think this is a stupid questions at all...if you think that you're worried about the dogs - you should see me worrying about the baby! I started asking his pediatrician what to do even before we closed on the house!

Re: PETS AND NEW HOMES.. stupid question

Good Question!

My parents just moved from a house to an apartment and the Rotty did great with the moved. It's like he never moved. He picked up some new habits - like he doesn't sleep on their floor at night anymore and at first he wouldn't leave my mom's side (he never follows my mom -always my dad) but other than that he was ok.

Re: PETS AND NEW HOMES.. stupid question

My kitten is like a toodler- I swear. She follows me from room to room and hates when I leave for too long. She cries for me to play with her, I swear. She plays hide&seek. I figured I moved and lived thru it so my cat will too
