random questions for anyone that has had a baby...

snowcutie82 and I were having a discussion about babys. After you give birth, usually you stay at the hospital at least 1 night right? More if you have a c-section?
How long after you give birth do they make you wait to take a shower?
Did they hand you the baby before or after they cleaned it off?
Did they baby stay in the room with you or in the baby nursery at night?

Re: random questions for anyone that has had a baby...

Well I haven't had him yet but as I understand it there are a lot of variables, depending on baby and mom's health, etc.

Typically, for normal v-or c-section births, the going stay is 2 nights for regular, 4 nights for c-sections.

How long after you give birth do they make you wait to take a shower? This is at least a couple of hours, you won't be doing any walking until you're 'recovered' a little bit, fluids are good, etc. Also any meds you might have had will slow down your ability to walk/stand safely. So best case I suppose is about 4 hours, worst case, 12 or more depending...

Did they hand you the baby before or after they cleaned it off? My obs will hand him straight to me very briefly, then he gets cleaned and wrapped, weighed and APGAR tested right away. ,
Did they baby stay in the room with you or in the baby nursery at night? Mine will be rooming-in, this policy is decided by the individual hospital -- but most folks choose in room if its offered, unless there's an issue that requires him to be in the nursery (special equipment, incubation, etc.)

snowcutie82 and I were having a discussion about babys. After you give birth, usually you stay at the hospital at least 1 night right? YES, YOU USUALLY GET 2 NIGHTS, LITERALLY. IF YOU GIVE BIRTH AT 11:58 PM ON A MONDAY NIGHT, YOU GET EVICTED WEDNESDAY MORNING.

More if you have a c-section? YES. C SECTIONS GET 3 OR DAYS

How long after you give birth do they make you wait to take a shower? NO ONE MENTIONED ANYTHING TO ME. I TOOK A SHOWER THE NEXT MORNING. THEY WANT YOU CLEAN "DOWN THERE"

Did they hand you the baby before or after they cleaned it off? AFTER

Did they baby stay in the room with you or in the baby nursery at night? BOTH. I SENT HER TO THE NURSERY FOR AN HOUR OR SO ON THE 2ND NIGHT.

All of your questions depend a lot on where you give birth, your practitioner, the nurses and how you feel.

Normal saty for a vaginal delivery is 24-48 hours although usually you have the option to leave earlier if you would like.

C-section is usually minumum of 72 hours since it is major surgery and they want to watch you...

My sister was up and walking around 15 minutes after she delivered my nephew and took a shower about an hour later after she spent some time with the baby.

I think for a c-section you have to wait 1 or two days because the incision can't get wet but the nurse will help to clean you up.

For the most part, for a normal vaginal delivery with no complications the baby will be put directly on your chest after its born and the nurses will dry him/her off on you and you can start bonding right away. If you don't want this you can request it.

For a c-section they usually take the baby over to the heating table and dry them off and then bring them to mom to see

As for the nursery , this istotally dependant on where you deliver and what you want. My sister had the baby with her 24/7 except for an hour when they did his circumcision. They brought him to the nursery for that and watched him for a bit after the procedure. If you want a break without the baby you can request the baby be brought to the nursery for a while. SOme hospitals don't always accomodate 24/7 rooming in so you have to check but most are moving in this direction!

I had a vaginal and stayed 2 nights .

I took a shower that night.

They handed me the baby as soon as she popped out !!

She stayed in the room with me but that was my choice . You can have the baby in the nursery if you choose !
