My 9/14/08 brown & pink wedding review w/ lots of LIW vendors! Milleridge Cottage, Oksana, Hair Genie, Twelfth Night, Halo Video, Ballroom Dance LI, Verbena, Exquisite Affair Productions etc.

We had so many problems on our wedding day but I can honestly say we still had such an amazing time. I tried to be as honest as possible in my review. Please feel free to FM me if you have any questions after you read this. My word of advice to future brides: Don’t get pulled over the night before your wedding, it does terrible things to your nerves on your wedding day.

LIWeddings.com - A

I’ve gotten so much valuable advice, ideas, a t-shirt and an i-pod from this website. I’ve found amazing vendors on here that I never would have known about if it weren’t for this website and for that I am grateful.

Photographer
Twelfth Night Photography A+
www.twelfthnightphoto.com

I will give a grade when I get my proofs but I love the teaser pics they have sent so far. My 2 photographers were Dom and Mike. Dom was great, he showed up early and has a great upbeat personality. The guests loved him! We did have a small problem with our 2nd photographer. He was supposed to be at the milleridge early to take pictures of DH and the GM but he was almost an hour late. I don’t know why, we were told he accidentally went to the carriage house but it’s only across the parking lot and it still took him a long time to get back. Dom was only supposed to be with us for 5 hours but instead he stayed the whole day, I think it was to make up for the time lost in the morning and DH and I really did appreciate having him there the whole day.

We received our pro pics and DH and I love them! Almost all of the pictures from this review are from Twelfth Night but here are a few, ok a lot, that we loved and there are a ton more in my album:

Florist
Verbena - A+
www.verbenadesigns.com

Jenn was amazing! She and her staff were the first people to show up at the RH, nothing was set up yet and Jenn went above and beyond to make the room look beautiful. My bo-q was to die for. The BM’s flowers were a teensy bit smaller than I expected but they were so gorgeous I didn’t care. If you’re looking for a florist I highly recommend Jenn and if you’re already using her, you have nothing to worry about.

Band
Code Bleu - A+
www.skylineorchestras.com

They deserve higher! I can’t tell you how many people complimented the band. So many of my guests took their card so they can refer them to their friends. Code Bleu kept the dance floor packed and for a day wedding, it was pretty damn impressive.

Gown
Bridal Elegance

I found my dress at a different bridal shop that wanted a lot of money for my dress and my mom was not willing to pay. I heard about Bridal Elegance on this site and called them to ask for a quote on my dress. It was a great price and my mom was on board.
I ordered my dress in August of 07. In December I called to find out when my dress should be in and they told me by the end of January. Well the end of January comes and goes and I call up the beginning of February to find out where my dress was and she said that Maggie Sottero forgot to take off the length (I ordered a shorter dress) and my dress would not be coming until MAY. Now I know that is plenty of time before my wedding but the principle here is that she at first told me January. P.S my dress showed up the end of June. It could be that this is the designer’s fault but I know of girls who ordered their Maggie dresses after me and their dresses came in sooner.

Second strike, not only did I order my dress through BE, all 7 of my BM’s did too and they ALL had problems with the fit of their dress. I believe that most shops will order the dresses a size bigger, not Phyllis. She measures you and orders your dress exactly to size. As a result, my girls were uncomfortable in their dresses the whole day and I couldn’t breathe. I was ordered a size 4 and it should have been a 6. My mother even said something to her when she placed the order but Phyllis said a 4 was the right size. Anyway, at my first fitting I could barely breathe, Phyllis said this was normal. I asked her to let the dress out and she charged me the full $400 for alterations. In my opinion, it was her fault that the dress was ordered in a tight size and I should not have had to pay the full amount. Even with the dress let out I was uncomfortable my whole wedding day.

Third strike, I picked up my dress the night before my wedding. I got to BE around 5 p.m. I had to be up at 4:30 a.m. to start getting ready for the wedding. When they unzipped the bag, I saw a small black stain on the front of the dress. It honestly wasn’t a big deal. I’m pretty easy going, the girl who works there put something on it and it looked a little better. Then I had seen that the dress was bustled up. I asked the girl if I’m supposed to let it out in my hotel room and she then realized that the back of the dress wasn’t steamed. So basically if I hadn’t seen that the dress was bustled I would have walked out with a wrinkled train. I was there for a half hour waiting for the steamer to heat up and waiting for her to steam the dress. Another half hour out of my already stressful night, the dress should have been ready when I got there. She was really apologetic and felt terrible about it.

Fourth and final strike, my bustle broke pretty much in the beginning of my reception. I had my train slung around my shoulder for almost the entire party and the pictures of me from the back look horrible because the dress is half bustled, half hanging.

Day of Coordinator
Christine @ Exquisite Affair Productions – A+
www.exquisiteaffairsproductions.com

DH was skeptical when I first hired a DOC, he didn’t understand why I needed one but now all he does is rave about her. Christine was my savior that day. My only regret is that I didn’t book her for the whole day. I don’t even know where to begin. When DH and I practiced our first dance I tripped all over my dress and freaked out. We had a choreographed first dance that I was nervous enough about and now I couldn’t do the steps because I was tripping on my dress. Christine pinned the whole bottom of my dress so I could dance in it. My mom even raved about her because she was the only person who could zip up her dress! She helped my bm’s with their dresses too. Do these reviews have a space limit? I can go on and on.

Brazil Bronze - A

I did a trial with brazil bronze a few months before my wedding. I highly recommend everyone doing this. I really like the way my tan looked but the only problem was the woman made me too dark for my wedding. I think she misheard me when I told her what I wanted. My words of advice are to be very specific if you do decide to go to brazil bronze and make sure you let them know this is for your wedding.

Calligraphy
EZ Calligraphy - A+
http://www.ezcalligraphy.com

Michelle was awesome to work with. My envelopes looked beautiful and she took a lot of time to make sure they worked. I bought metallic envelopes that matched our invitations and a lot of printers have trouble with those. She found a way to do it and even made us extra envelopes free of charge when I made a mistake on one of the guest's names.

Dance Lessons
John @ Ballroom Dance Long Island – A+
www.ballroomdancelongisland.com

When DH and I met with John, we had already taken group dance lessons and thought we were pretty good. We didn’t realize how an instructor should instruct until we met with John. John was simply amazing and even DH raved about him. He even threw in a little Hora lesson for free, lol. We honestly looked forward to our lessons each week and were kind of sad when they ended. We’re definitely going to continue lessons with John even though our wedding is over.

Tuxedos
Men’s Wearhouse - A
24-20 Bell Blvd.
Bayside, NY

No problems here. We had GM that rented tuxedos from all over the country. You can’t beat the convenience of MW. The only down side to using them was their lack of color selection. I really would have liked the ties to be a little deeper pink but the next shade of pink they carried was too dark.

Wedding Shoes
After Five – A+
Port Washington, NY
(516) 767-2577

I loved my shoes! I checked out a few stores and was not impressed with any of their selections but After Five had the largest selection I’ve seen. She died them pink for me and did an awesome job and will be dying them black for free once I get my lazy self back to Port Washington.

Day of Jewelry
Top Drawer – A+
39-36 Bell Blvd
Bayside, NY 11361
(718) 428-1657

I bought my earrings here. I don’t have pierced ears and it was such a PITA trying to find nice clip-ons. This store was able to take most of their pierced earrings and convert them to clip-ons. They absolutely killed my ears. I think I had dents in my ear lobes for a week but they looked awesome. I’ll definitely risk the pain and wear them again.

Make-up
Oksana - A
www.makeupbyoksana.com

I don’t wear make-up on a daily basis so finding a make-up artist I liked was a really difficult task. I booked Oksana because of all the amazing reviews I read about her on the site and I was not disappointed. My make-up looked so good! The only reason why she got an A and not an A+ was solely based on attitude and it really upsets me to write this. Up until the day of my wedding I had no issues with Oksana, she was a sweetheart! The morning of my wedding I was hesitant to pick a blush color because I didn’t like the blush in either of my trials. This annoyed her and at one point she yelled at me. It was pretty embarrassing being yelled at by your make-up artist the morning of your wedding and quite frankly, didn’t help my nerve situation. I’m going to chalk this up to her having a bad day and I still recommend her. She still does great make-up, yelling at me or not.

Hair
Jenn the Hair Genie – A

Of course with my luck, my wedding fell on a horrible hair day but by looking at my pictures you’d never know it. That’s because Jenn performed miracles nothing short of parting the Red Sea. Ok maybe not THAT miraculous but pretty darn close. I’ll also explain why I gave an A and not an A+. Jenn and I had a misunderstanding. I was looking to hire a 2nd hair stylist because I had so many girls that needed their hair done. Jenn told me I don’t need a 2nd stylist and that she can bring an assistant. Months later she tells me the assistant will be an extra $100. Meanwhile, I could have hired someone months before for free! I told her I couldn’t afford it and she said I should have no trouble finding a 2nd stylist which, luckily, I didn’t but the whole situation really bothered me. She also had a little bit of an attitude with my MOH, enough for my MOH to say something to me after the wedding. Again, Jenn does do great hair and if I had to do my wedding over I’d hire her again. Same goes for Oksana.

Hair by Diana
www.hairavella.com

I had 7 bridesmaids and 4 other family members that wanted their hair done that all had to be ready by 9;30 a.m. I definitely needed a 2nd stylist. I randomly found Diana on the vendor list on this website. She was very sweet and even agreed to match the prices of the other stylist. My only complaint is that some of the girl’s hair fell by the end of the day.

Videographer
Halo Video B+
http://halovideo.com/

At first DH and I were on the fence about hiring a videographer. When a few of the girls on this website mentioned Halo and how reasonable they are we decided to hire them. We received our video and are very happy we decided to hire a videographer. The reason why Halo received a B+ is because there was a miscommunication between Jose and our actual videographer. Apparently Jose relayed the wrong arrival time to the videographer even after Christine (our DOC), and DH and I, had told him the specific time to be there. As a result, there is no video footage of me and the bridal party getting ready which really upsets me. To make up for his mistake, Jose did take some money of our package and threw in a honeymoon montage and an extra DVD and DH and I really appreciated his efforts.

Rehearsal Lunch
Cascarino’s – A+
www.cascarinos.com
Bayside, NY

We had to do something for our out of town guests but we had to keep it in a small budget because the wedding was taking us to the cleaners. We worked out a deal with cascarino’s and they gave us a great rate. Of course I have a teensy complaint. There’s only one party room and our party overlapped with the party that was coming in after us and they came into our party and sat in our booths! And, I can’t be positive but I think they ate some of our cake. DH said something to the head waiter who asked us if we minded and DH said yes we paid to have this room until a certain time but still nothing was done to keep them out.

Milleridge Cottage – A-
585 North Broadway
Jericho, NY
www.milleridge.com

This is hard because there were so many great things about the Milleridge but there were also a few things I was disappointed with. Let me start off by saying that Leslie was our BM and she was an absolute doll. I have nothing but kind things to say about Leslie. The food was amazing, everyone raved about the food. Shocking enough DH and I even got to eat a little bit that day and everything was delicious.

Our Maitre’D was very attentive. He was constantly coming to make sure we were ok and didn’t need anything. I also found the wait staff to be attentive, they brought me and DH so many drinks I was giving them to my bm’s table at one point because there were too many! If you’re having your wedding at the milleridge, please don’t let the rest of this review scare you. It honestly was an amazing wedding and I’ve received so many compliments on every aspect of the Milleridge.

I gave the Milleridge an A- because we did have a few mishaps on our wedding day. First mishap, right before the ceremony we were sitting down to sign the ketubah but there was a big problem. No one can find the ketubah! DH told the Maitre’D that he had the ketubah in the bridal suite and one of his staff members must have moved it. Instead of taking action to help us find the ketubah, the Maitre’D kept insisting no one moved it. This went on for a good few minutes. Then DH asked him where the dumpster is and the MD insisted it was not in the dumpster. The best man took it upon himself to look in the dumpster. Lo and behold, the ketubah was in the dumpster! Our best man had to jump in the trash and pull it out. After all this happened (no one was letting me know what was going on because they didn’t want to freak me out), I remember seeing the bridal attendant with the envelope that held the ketubah.

Second mishap, well it’s not really a mishap. I really did not care for our bridal attendant. She was great with making sure we always had something to drink and she brought up a ton of food from CH. However, I hardly saw her! My bustle broke after Christine (my DOC) left and I had all 6 of my bm’s trying to figure out what to do. No one else came to help me. I’ve read stories on here where girl’s bridal attendant’s were amazing and helped them when their bustle broke but mine was really just a personal waitress, not a bridal attendant. I’m so glad I hired Christine because when it came time to loosen my dress or pin up my bustle this girl would have been clueless.

Third mishap, I really can’t blame this on the wait staff, I had 185 guests who could have been the culprits but one of my bm’s digital camera’s was stolen off the table. Also, one of our guests left his envelope on our table but it magically fell on the floor and was ripped opened. Someone turned it into the Maitre’D and he gave it to me, I checked it and the check was still in there but I can guarantee you that if that gift was cash it would have been gone. Again, I have no evidence that it was the wait staff but I felt this worthy of being put in my review.

Also, there weren’t enough coffee cups for all our guests. DH asked the Maitre’D to get more so everyone can have coffee and he said he was going to but the extra cups were never brought out.

Veil and Headpiece
Barrons – A+
Tri-County Flea Market

My veil and headpiece were gorgeous, and the price was great!

Table Runners
Fabric House – A+
214 W 39th St
New York, NY
(212) 944-7016

At first I tried to rent table runners but when I found out how much companies were charging to do this I figured it’d be cheaper to do it myself. Dh and I went into the city and stumbled upon the Fabric House. We chose the color we wanted and the guy who worked there hand ripped 21 pieces of fabric (we asked for 20, he gave us the 21st as a wedding present from him, haha). The price was amazing. We took the fabric to our local taylor who sewed and steamed all the runners. When all was said and done we spent about $300 and they looked amazing! It really made a difference to the look of the room as a whole.

Yarmulkes
http://www.kipot.com - A+

We ordered light pink and brown suede yarmulkes, the price was great and they looked fabulous. I was amazed by how many guys thanked us for the pink yarmulkes. They were a big hit!

DIY paper
http://www.paperandmore.com - A+

This was a great website for all our DIY paper needs. We used paperandmore for our invitations, our menus and our donation favor cards. Metallic paper can get pricey but their prices were great and their paper was beautiful.

Cardbox
For the Modern Bride – A+
http://forthemodernbride.com/

This was one of my favorite vendors! They designed the box exactly how I wanted it. When they sent me the proof I didn’t like the original ribbon they used so I asked them to change and they did right away. They were so easy to work with I would recommend them to anyone.

Officiants
Rabbi Swerdlow and Father Malone – A

My mother went to a wedding where Father Malone and Rabbi Swerdlow were the officiants. She liked the ceremony so much that she recommended we check them out. Once we met them we immediately liked them and booked them on the spot. We received so many compliments on how beautiful the ceremony was.

The only negative thing I have to add to this review is that DH really did not want to walk down the aisle. In Jewish wedding ceremonies, the groom will walk down the aisle but in Catholic wedding ceremonies, the groom is already up at the alter. A few weeks before the wedding we let the Rabbi know that DH will not be walking down the aisle and he tried to get us to change our minds. On the day of the wedding, he asked DH one more time if he will walk down the aisle and DH just gave into him. We had to change some of the order of the processional because of the last minute change. Even with the slight inconvenience, my ceremony was beautiful and I 100% recommend them for an interfaith wedding.

Travel Agent
Travel Tom – A+
[email protected]

From the second we spoke to Tom DH and I loved him! I’m so glad we went with him to book our honeymoon. We had some mishaps on our trip regarding the rental car. Someone cancelled our reservations. Hertz called Tom at 1 a.m. (since Hawaii is 6 hours behind our time) and he took care of everything. DH and I opted for a car with navigation and Tom paid for the upgrade to make up for our troubles. Tom also was able to get us free breakfasts at both our hotels, which was a huge bonus.

Hawaii Review

Which ever islands you are going to, I highly recommend getting the revealed books by Andrew Doughty. We bought the books for both islands and they were lifesavers. It gives you recommendations on excursions, nightlife, sights, tours, beaches, dining, etc.

A previous LIWer gave the advice of getting all your souvenirs at Walmart. This was such great advice that I’m passing it on to you. It’s the same merchandise as the overpriced stores at your resort.

Kaua’i

Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa – A+
The Grand Hyatt in Kaua'i

This resort was absolutely beautiful. The only negative thing about it was you can’t really swim in the ocean by the resort. The water is too rough. The hotel makes up for it with their man made salt water lagoon. DH and I spent a lot of time there! We also ate at 3 of the restaurants at the resort. If you’re going to do any of them you should try Tidepools, it was excellent. Dondero’s was also good. We also went to The Library for sushi, this was the only meal I wasn’t crazy about. Last, I highly recommend the couples massage at this resort, it was so relaxing.

Oh, and there also isn’t much of a nightlife but I didn’t only find this with the hotel, I found it with Hawaii in general.

View from our room

Ziplining
Back Country Adventures – A+
http://www.kauaibackcountry.com

This is a must do in Kauai! It was scary at first but so worth it. The employees were very professional and I felt safe with them

Maui

Fairmont Kea Lani Resort – B+
The Fairmont Kea Lani

I don’t know whether we didn’t like this hotel because it wasn’t the Hyatt or we just didn’t like the hotel. We had a gorgeous room and the hotel was very pretty but it was kind of empty. I don’t know whether it was the economy, an off season, or because it’s right next to a Four Seasons but it was actually a little depressing. If you’re going to stay in Maui I recommend the Four Seasons instead. DH and I went to a restaurant there and it was a much nicer hotel. We would have much rather stayed there.

Road to Hana

If you’re going to do the Road to Hana definitely buy the book I mentioned earlier. It’s a mile by mile guide and tells you places to stop and things to see along the way. I only went because DH really wanted to go but IMO I’m not sure if it was worthwhile.

Old Lahaina Luau – A+
www.oldlahainaluau.com

This was included in our package with Travel Tom. It was so much fun. We were told the food at luau’s was not very good because of the abundance of people they are cooking for but I can honestly say that the food here was great! The show was a lot of fun to watch

This guy forgot his costume and borrowed this outfit from DH

Restaurants in Maui

Spago - This was a Wolfgang Puck Restaurant located in the Four Seasons Hotel. The food was amazing. Definitely try out this restaurant if you’re near it.

Pita Paradise – We tried to have less expensive lunches so we can have fancy dinners. If you want to do this too I highly recommend Pita Paradise. I had a mahi mahi pita that was out of this world and the prices weren’t so bad considering we were in Hawaii.

Mama’s Fish House - Another must try. It’s a little far from the resorts but the fish was so yummy.

Re: My 9/14/08 wedding review!

Great review and I was laughing out loud about the Hawaii books, they were the only books we brought to Maui and Kauai b/c they were given to us by friends who said the same thing. They got us through both islands and were fantastic! True also about Walmart, we bought a lot there, and also the ABC Stores, we loved that place! Glad you had a beautiful wedding and wonderful honeymoon! Your Hawaii pics made me want to go back!!
