Non-traditional Engagement ring......& reactions
My FI and I have been un-offically engaged for a few months now....but have not gotten an engagement ring due to financial constraints (we just recently graduated from college and loans are mounting.)
I have seen a few post regarding ladies getting non-traditional engagement rings such as Sapphire, ruby, or Claddaugh rings.
I wanted to know how families took the news and the reactions of others?
I can't wait to be offically engaged so we can start planning and I am that much closer to being his wife.....yet I need to know what to brace myself for in regards to our family and friends.
Thanks in advance
Michelle
On a side note....if anyone has pics of non-traditional engagement rings...I would LOVE to see them

Re: Non-traditional Engagement ring......& reactions
I believe an engagment ring is a symbol of the love that 2 people share, the only person that the rings, appearance should matter to is you & fh.Remember you will cherish it for the rest of your life dont worry what others have you have love So many people long for true love,i say do what best suits you & fh

Re: Non-traditional Engagement ring......& reactions
There is a girl on here (Thrilled) and I believe her e-ring has a diamond and the 2 side stones are onyx (I could be wrong what the side stones are. They are either onyx or saphire. Sorry I really cant remember at the moment) and its absolutly stunning. What I love about her ring is its different. Its stunning because it stands out and I can remember what her ring looks like because its so different (I have a lot of friends that are married or engaged and I cant remember what their rings look like.
I think there is not one problem with non traditional rings. I think they are the ones that stand out and make the ring a lot more special (i have a regular traditional ring)
Just like the girls above said, its your ring and its to matter to you and FI what it looks like. Its you who has to love it.

Re: Non-traditional Engagement ring......& reactions
anyone who has any nerve to say anything other than nice shoudl be ashamed - it doesn't matter how big/small/traditional or untraditional your ring is - its that you two love each other and want to spend your life together which matters...a friend of mine's parents had a paper ring when they got married (he crafted it in somewhat of an intricate way - its hard to explain) and today they are very well off but she treasures that ring....its still in her jewlery box and is more priceless than any jewelry she has since gotten!

Re: Non-traditional Engagement ring......& reactions
My ring is an emerald w/ diamonds on each side. It's not "tradtional" but it is EXACTLY what I wanted!! All my life I wanted an emerald & now I have the best kind!! Every one I showed it liked it because it was different.

my ring is Saphire, with diamonds on the side. I absolutely love it, and not one person has had a negative comment.

Did you ever think of getting a setting and putting a CZ in it - and then later replacing it?

Re: Non-traditional Engagement ring......& reactions
Don't have to ask me twice! My side stones are sapphires and are a very dark blue, which is why they look almost black, like onyx. They are actually darker than this picture. Thanks for the compliment Melissa!

Re: Non-traditional Engagement ring......& reactions
My friend got engaged in Italy with a ring that her now husband bought there.. I think it is a blue topaz or something- very pretty, very european. Nothing had a "bad" thing to say- it was very lovely . When they were able to he bought her the diamond too.

Re: Non-traditional Engagement ring......& reactions
I've seen e-rings that has a pearl as the center stone and two little side diamonds. In fact I used to have a ring like that ( my father got it for me for my B-day) and people used to mistake it as a e-ring all the time since I wore it on my ring finger.

Re: Non-traditional Engagement ring......& reactions
doesn't sound like that is your first choice if you can afford it get a smaller ring, and then get a bigger stone put in iit later. my fiances grandmother did that. My fiance wouldnt have had money for the ring except his parents put a little money an account for him. I picked out my ring and it happend to be less than he had, so we had leftover money. I think for a non tradition ring, sapphire seems to be the most common.....
Perhaps there is a ring that one of his grandmothers would pass down to him to give to you(ie. their engagement ring)???

Re: Non-traditional Engagement ring......& reactions
I think that if you really want a diamond, there are plenty of places where you can get a good deal. But when it comes down to it, diamond shmimond. It's not like the ring is going to make your phone calls for you when planning, or cook FH dinner or argue for you when you get tired. It's a ring, it's like the current monetary system, backed by faith Good luck to you!
