I don't understand why someone WOULDN'T want an open bar. Do you really want to be paying for drinks all night? Sheesh!

Re: Poll - Calling all brides, newlyweds....

My dad keeps joking that I am getting married so quickly, becasue my brother had a two year engagment, and I am having a ten month one

Maybe becaseu we are in the process of having a house built and we have been together for 10 years. My dad isn't upset that I am getting marreid but just that I only gave him 10 months to get the money that he wants to give me together.

My FSIL told my FH after he asked her to be in BP, that she will go to the shower, but onloy for a little bit, since I will really want to spend the time with my friends.

Okay - maybe she meant the Bachelorette party, not really sure, but she better be at the shower for the whole time, and she better help!!!!

A vendor asked my FH yesterday, "what do you do for a living?" "Oh then you can certainly afford such and such" how rude.

Re: Poll - Calling all brides, newlyweds....

I have a few comments...mostly funny not really mean:
My fiance and I are both 25 but have been told that we look very young...

Our priest: Do you have your parents permission? (he later admitted he thought we were still in high school!)

Several random people after seeing my ring: You are TOO young to be getting married.

My secratary at work to someone else (which i inadvertently overheard): What do you think her FH does to afford a ring like that? He looks so young...he must be a drug dealer!

A random person in the cafeteria at work: WOW...your FH must have sold your first born to afford that rock...sure hope your worth it (everytime he sees me since he calls me the rock lady)

On another note:

Ken James: Because I like you two so much i am going to give you a special deal and not charge you tax...HELLO there is no tax on music!

Re: Poll - Calling all brides, newlyweds....

Hey stinker, I got that one too from my mom! "Well you know, your shower can't be a surprise..."

Oh yeah, they were actually a few more. I at first was thinking of having my girls wear black and FMIL says to me "Black! It's NOT a funeral!" and I also heard "A year and a half?! You're not children." Wow, I never realized being 28 was over-the-hill!!!

Re: Poll - Calling all brides, newlyweds....

From my mom before we got engaged "Two years??? So you can be 30 and he'll be 40? What's the point?" I'll be 29 he'll be 38 -- math just isn't her subject.

From every schmuck with $.02 and no brains "Two years?? Why so long?"

From my uncle's wife this weekend "I heard weddings in New York cost between 30 and 50k. So how much are you spending?"

From my uncle "You're really going through with it? I thought when you realized what its gonna cost you'd go elope. We didn't have a fancy wedding"

Give me time, I'll remember the rest!

Re: Poll - Calling all brides, newlyweds....

oh, you gotta love these...

from my boss: "you live like you're married anyway, why have a wedding?"
(He said this in front of my entire team 15 attorneys! guess cuz we live together and own our own home - which i think is very responsible at 28, but apparently not everyone else thinks so. )

from my mom (we laugh now, but i was really hurt): when i put on the veil I thought i wanted with my dress and turned to her beaming,..."oh you're not going to wear that are you?"

from parents and close family members: "are you really sure you want to do this?"

from every stupid schmoe who has no concept of individuality: "oh, that's your engagement ring??!! he couldn't afford a diamond?" (it is a solitaire amethyst (purple) not a diamond!);
and
"you are NOT really going to have dogs in your wedding? where are you getting married, a farm??" (um no, try the Vanderbilt Mansion idiot!)

what is wrong with people? the worst ones were from my first cousin who has always been my closest girl friend and sister. unfortunately, her jealousy finally came between us and she really was not there for me at my wedding (even though she was one of my MOHs). but mostly, i just feel awful for her because i know how much she must be hurting to behave as badly as she did. hopefully we can move on from here.

Re: Poll - Calling all brides, newlyweds....

From my mother - who I ADORE -

"Oh honey! What a beautiful dress! And so appropriate for a mature bride!" (I'm 31)

and

"I'm sorry sweetheart, I just can't spend my retirement throwing a big fat drunk (party) for a bunch of Irish cops I've never met before." She is not paying for our wedding btw - this was in asking her to contribute, which she is.

FH's father: "Whaddya mean you're not having a Mass? You're not having a Mass? Wait -you're not having a Mass? I don't think the church recognizes your marriage unless you have the Eucharist! Are you kids serious?" We said yes - we are having the 30 min ceremony instead of the hour long Mass and yes, the church absolutely considers the wedding valid in that case - , he said "Well I just don't know if I can support that."

I think he is coming around. FH basically told him support or not, that was the way it was going to be.

1) why do you want to do that at your wedding?

2) you still aren't married yet?

Re: Poll - Calling all brides, newlyweds....

This happened 36 ago, but something you never forget. My dad developed cancer so we married within 5 weeks of our engagement. He died 8 months after my wedding and I was 6 months pregnant at the time. Someone at the funeral pointed to my belly and said, "You still haven't had that yet?"

my favorite:
"don't invite me to your f*&^ing engagement party and don't invite me to your f*&^ing wedding!"

direct quote from my LOVELY fsil to my fh.

yes, she was serious, and she's been invited to both.

edited to say:
and people ask us, "Why didn't you ask <FSIL> to be a bridesmaid?" You've GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!

Re: Poll - Calling all brides, newlyweds....

That sounds a little like my FSIL and FBIL - No you are not allowed to invite our children to the wedding (FH's neices -one is his godchild and his nephew) b/c we want to be able to party and if they are at the wedding then we will be stuck watching them SO FSIL says you are not allowed to invite my family (her parents OR her two brothers and one of their wives) so that THEY can stay home and WATCH FBIL and FSIL's kids!!!!! and they CAN"T hire a babysitter - can you guess - why - they expect to party too hard to be able to go home that night

FH tells me they are being invited anyway b/c NO ONE tells him that he can't invite people - and does not want to alienate her family - so he feels that FSIL can tell them that they can't attend and they they have to stay home and watch the kids

Re: Poll - Calling all brides, newlyweds....

although I could come up with a millions words of wisdom from FMIL, the best /or worst comes from a bridesmaid with whom I am having MAJOR problems:

It's so ****ed up that you're having a shower, I mean just because you're getting married, you get to have a party where people give you gifts???

thats just the tip of the iceberg

Re: Poll - Calling all brides, newlyweds....

ok, I was in a parent-teacher conference and a parent asked me when I was getting married and I said "Valentine's Day next year." She replied with, "I don't know why people get married on holidays and such because when you get a divorce you are ALWAYS reminded of it."
Can you believe how negative that comment was!

1. Why are you waiting so long? Is it because you want to make sure he/she is the one??
NO @ss, it's because I need to graduate law school, take the Bar and get a job. Plus, we're paying for the wedding ourselves, we need to save $$

2. Already getting asked when the kids are coming? HELLLLLOOOOO...We're not even married yet. And I haven't started my career yet and am only 24 years old.

Re: Poll - Calling all brides, newlyweds....

The priest asked us twice how old we are (we look so young). He didn't believe us at first!

I got the good thing you aren't living in sin anymore comment too. We'd only been living together for 3 months before the wedding b/c we bought a home.

People ask us when the kids are coming.

Re: Poll - Calling all brides, newlyweds....

My best friend's mom...Well if your bridal party is going to be uneven why don't you ask X (her son in law) to be a groomsmen. Hello! Maybe because we don't really get along and don't care if our party is uneven.

My sister one of my MOH's had the nerve to suggest that my bridal party borrow the dresses from her SIL's wedding so she wouldn't have to buy another dress. And yes, she was serious!

I know there is more but I can't think.....

Re: Poll - Calling all brides, newlyweds....

Where to begin????? WHERE TO BEGIN??? I could write a book! (I might, actually)

1.) Before we were officially engaged:
FstepMIL: "Are you going to have an engagement party?"
Me: "No, we're really trying to save for the wedding...."

She then launches into this whole thing about how FH's cousin is having an engagement brunch on a Sunday morning -- it actually sounded nice, so I said:
Me: "Maybe we'll consider that....."
then I say to FH: "Let's look at some restaurants near us.... " (we live about 45 mins from FILs)
FstepMIL: "Well, you can't just have it near you guys, you have to make it convenient for everyone..."

Excuse me???? Most of my family, most of our wedding party, and most of his relatives live closer to us! I have bridesmaids in 2 different states! Give me a break!!!(p.s. – we didn’t have a party)

2.) In regard to the number of guests for the wedding.... (this one's my favorite):
FstepMIL: "How many guests are you planning to have?"
Me: "We're really trying to keep the numbers down. We have a lot of friends..."
FstepMIL: (seriously condescending tone) "Well, family's gonna be more generous than friends...."

***?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? Is this a wedding or a charity benefit? And how does she know what kind of gifts our friends will give us? Both my FH and I would rather have close friends at the wedding, than family we never see....

3. FMIL: "What day of the week is the wedding?"
Me: "A Saturday."
FMIL: "Really?!?!?"

Yup, that's right. We're going for the big bucks!

4.) File this under "what they DIDN'T say" : not a card (much less a gift) for our engagement from FH's two brothers (both married), and FH's numerous aunts/uncles….

5.) "But you’re so young…" FH’s aunt to FH. (HUH?!?!? FH is 33, I’m 28. This aunt got married at 18, btw)

6.) "Wow, aren’t you kind of rushing it?" FH’s brother, who lived with his wife for 7 years before getting married. (We were together a year and a half at time of engagement, and will know be together almost three years when we get married.)

7.) "I’m sure Terrier’s a nice girl and all, but…." FH’s brother again. (But what, jerkwad?)

8.) "Your brothers will be so hurt that you didn’t ask either of them to be best man" – FH’s other aunt to FH. (This one doesn’t even need an explanation…)

9.) "You see this, this is a classy invitation. It’s plain – not with flowers and stuff…" FstepMIL, showing me an invitation for her friend’s daughter’s wedding. (She also did the same with the wedding cake – gave FH a picture from her daughter’s wedding of "how the cake should look" Lady, you’ve already had two weddings…. You want to chose invitations and cakes, etc., have a third!!!)

10.) "I’m so hurt you’re not having children at the wedding…. I was going to buy dresses for the girls. Are you SURE you won’t have kids at the wedding?" FstepMIL. (We ain’t having kids at the wedding…. GET OVER IT!!!!)

11.) "But you hardly know him – I mean, who is this guy?" former co-worker/boss. (again – HUH?!?!?! How long do I know YOU? Four
months? He’s been fired anyway….good riddance!)

and last but not least....

12.) "I’ll give you the china for your first anniversary – if your marriage lasts that long…" FFIL, regarding my FH’s dead mother’s china, which he had already promised us…. Guess what? I DON’T WANT THE CHINA!!!!)

There’s more…. I just can’t think of it now….
