I lost everything on my computer!

My laptop won't turn on and I brought it into Comp USA to get fixed. Well it will cost over $600 to fix it. Everything I created for the wedding was on the hard drive. They are giving me a big problem at Comp USA about backing up my data. I told them how important those files are to me. I had my programs on there, my table names (I had downloaded and scanned pictures of FI and I at 14 different cities of the world, I spent months on it). Our budget spreadsheet is on there too. The files were too large to back up on disk. I have 4 weeks to go and need my files back! Just needed to vent...sorry.

$600?? That is crazy!!!!! Does anyone you know work in an office? Bring it to the computer guy and he should be able to retrieve the info and restore it no problem. Comp USA is ripping you off. I just did it with FI's computer.

Karen, Oh NO!!! I am so sorry to hear that. I know how stressful everything is now (BELIEVE ME!). Is there anyone you know who works with computers that can help??

I'll check with the computer guy here at my work, maybe he can help, although sometimes it seems that I know more than him with computers (which is very sad). Hopefully someone can get my files and soon so that I can start to print out everything. I wanted to ship out everything to NY this month. Luckily I had already finished the menus, so that is a relief.

I'm so sorry to hear that! I lost my wedding spreadsheet a few weeks ago! I can totally relate to that!

So sorry to hear about the pics you lost! I hope you can get your comp fixed and recover all that you lost!

Oh my gosh :(, I'm so sorry...if you lived on LI I'd put you in contact with my FH - he's a computer genius. I hope everything works out.

Definately check with you computer guy. Sometimes they do not really know about programs like word and excel. They know more about the hardware and configuration (???) of the computer.

I highly doubt that your files are unretrievable. That's just the easy way out.

What operating system were you running on your laptop (Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows XP)?

Unless your harddrive is physically damaged, like you ran it over with your car or you ran it beneath a magnet, your data is most assuredly recoverable.

What do you mean, retrieved on a CDrom? You can copy files up to 650 MB onto a typical CDrom. That is VERY LARGE mind you. Most very large files are only 20-30 MB.

Additionally, you can buy a USB cable that will hook up to your 'damaged' hard drive. Plug the USB cable into another laptop and you can read your hard drive like it was just an extra drive on the computer. Then you won't care if the operating system is damaged, because you can just find the files you want. Any computer technician should be able to do this. You can buy the USB cable I am talking about online. We had to do it for my mom's laptop a few years ago.
