Mommies... how soon did you/would you take your baby away overnight??

DH's uncle invited us to Kutsher's in Monticello (?) for a night (or more) the last week of July or early August...It's about a 2-hour drive each way.

I don't want to be a Nervous Nelly, but, is it too soon to take Peanut away overnight? He/she should be about 3 - 4 weeks old?!!

I took Emma for an 8 hour drive (one way) when she was about a month old to Dereks parents cabin in the Adarondaks. She slept most of the time in the car and was great when we were up there. Have baby will travel.

I am trying to figure out when we can bring the baby to Scott's family in MA. with Christmas being so close to the baby's due date I am just not sure when is a good time to go.

This question is really up to each mom to decide.
I have friends that wont leave to go somewhere unless their children have woken up from their naps. and I have friends who's children will adapt to any situation, will nap on the road, etc.

So it really depends on what you feel comfortable with. Most Dr's recommend at least 8 wks old when you take the baby into public places. We just did a four hour drive to Lake George recently and the boys (8m and 11m) were pretty restless after about 2-3 hours in the car. But that wouldnt stop me from doing it again. We made sure to get out at rest stops, let them stretch their little legs, roll around in the grass, etc..

Its really what you feel comfortable with !

Many years ago, people did not believe in taking the baby anywhere until after they were christened! Can you imagine staying cooped up in your home for 3-4 months??? NO WAY!

We took Paul everywhere w/us pretty early on, but that's b/c we did not have anyone to babysit for us while we were still in California. Paul was only days old and he was going for walks in the stroller, rides in the car, trips to the mall for hours at a time (we had a bad heatwave and no air conditioning in our apartment).

When we moved, Paul was only 10 weeks old - we had to stay in a hotel for two nights and we took a 6 hour plane ride to get to NY. He was absolutely fine, in fact probably oblivious. As long as you keep them on their schedule, they won't notice a difference at that age. IMO, it is EASIER to take them ANYWHERE when they are so little.

I know this is going to make for some 'debate' when the time comes, but I won't be making the trip up to the Poconos to see my MIL until the baby is at least a month or more old, much to her disappointment!! It's a long ride and we go up on Friday night after Joe gets home from work, so it's pitch dark driving up there.

Then again, I don't think I can really answer this until the time comes. Who knows if I'll want to sit in the car for that long!!!

We took Annalise out right from the start. We got the 'OK' from her dr. at her 5 day appt. who said she should not live in a bubble since she is healthy. I happen to think they travel best the first few months because they sleep so much during the day. We took her to her cousins christening at 8 days old an you would not have known she was there if you did not see me feeding her. She slept unless she was eating. We took her on a 3 week vacation at 4 months old. We took a plane ride to AZ where we rented an RV. We were then on the road for 2 weeks camping and hiking in the Natl'l Pks. She has been to the tops of several mountains in a Snugli. She traveled well since she was not mobile yet. We had to take frequent breaks on the road for me to nurse her. Take signs from the baby when he/she has had enough. They let you know when they need a break. I am all for healthy babies traveling. She turned 6 months last wk. and has never been sick (knock on wood) despite all this traveling.

WOW VICTORIA that is GREAT! we are camping people too and i am thinking of all the extra work(that will fall on MY shoulders!) with camping.

I was told not to take J out into crowded places until she was 6 weeks old,,,of course we are talking jan- feb in this case,..and we had a lot of snow this winter

took J up to the poconos to visit family for a christening the last week of March...that was for 2 days.

And we just went to Lancaster 2 weekends ago...and was there for 3 days in a motel. No problems altho the first night J really foughgt going to sleep after being inthe car earlier that day for 4 hours...that is when we had that BAD rainstorm

i guess you need to ask your dr....and then go with your gut. If the weather is in your favor, thats a plus

Thanks, ladies!! It will probably be a last minute decision for us as far as booking a room goes. Since I don't know when Peanut will be here...I'll wait and see.

I think I'd feel more comfortable if we had our 'routine' down, which I'm thinking will be at least 3 weeks!! I will definitely check w/ the Dr., too!

ETA: Victoria - I think Annalise has traveled more in her 6 months than I have in my life!!
