Another question for the teachers: Substitution of Experience for Student Teaching

I will graduate with a BA from NYU but not from the school of ed. I will have taken 18 hours of education courses though.

So the only thing (aside from the tests and the security clearances) that I need is student teaching.

I read on the NY State website that is possible to use one year of teaching experience in lieu of student teaching.

My question is - did any of you ladies do this? Do you know anyone who did? I'm wondering if it really ever happens, and who hires the uncertified teachers (maybe private schools)?

THANK YOU!!

Reading other people's comments made me change my advice. See below.

Hi, I tried doing this (teaching in a private school for a year), but now, it is TWO years you have to teach in a private school. And since I moved and was miserable at my school, it was not worth stay another year. The way I see it is, it's only one semester that I have to student teach. It's not the end of the world. I work mainly at night as it is, so it's no biggie.

thnaks you guys - I should talk to a counselor here. I wonder if it would be worth my paying NYU tuition for the student teaching semester (I currently do not have to pay b/c I am an employee).

Do you get paid when you student-teach?

My co-worker did this for one year but it was in one of the worst schools in the city and we are in a shortage area but I must tell she said she regrets it. She lost having A LOT of valuable tricks and tips being passed onto her and she had A TON of problems up until last year.

Student teaching IMO is a very valuable experience. I know not getting paid or having the health benefits Suck but what you learn is so worth it- but this is JMHO

Re: Another question for the teachers: Substitution of Experience for Student Teaching

I did student teaching and, 9 years later, still thank God to this day for this experience. Unfortunately, you don't get paid - in fact, when I was at NYU, it was a 6-credit course. And I was at a pretty bad high school in Manhattan (but had a great experience). I like Swags advice alot - student teaching is for 6 months only whereas teaching without the student teaching is for 2 years. You may also get a lot more support as a student teacher. What grade and subject are you studying for? If you are getting certified in high school, I may be able to help you out. I teach in a high school in the upper East side.
