LOS ANGELES (CNN) -- Detectives are questioning several people in connection with the killing of Yetunde Price, the eldest sister and personal assistant to tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams.

Price, 31, was shot in the chest shortly after midnight after she and a companion were involved in a street dispute, said Deputy Scott Butler, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The shooting occurred in the suburb of Compton, where the sisters grew up.

Sheriff's deputies found the wounded Price in a white sport-utility vehicle. She died a short time later at a local hospital, Butler said.

Investigators were questioning the man who was with her at the time of the shooting, Butler said, and had detained several others for questioning as well.

'Some are witnesses. Some may have other information to share,' he said.

Police technicians were combing the SUV for clues Sunday afternoon.


Venus and Serena Williams are the youngest of five girls.
Price was the eldest of five daughters of Richard Williams and Oracene Price.

Ruth Grant, 51, who has lived on the street for more than two decades, said heard the gunfire shortly after midnight, and then went to sleep.

When she awoke in the morning to prepare for a Sunday school class, she saw helicopters flying overhead and dozens of police in the street.

Such occurrences are not routine, she said. 'Every once in a while, you hear cars going by burning rubber and shooting, but that's not often,' she said.

It wasn't Venus or Serena- it was their older sister.

Yeah, saw the news earlier today. Happened to the oldest sister in Compton..... How sad.

She was in Compton cause that is where they grew up. This is so sad. I cant believe that!

People magazine just had an article on celebrity sisters and they just featured her in it. She was their personal assistant and mother of 3? I think. It's really horrible what happened to her.

I heard on fox news that she was in an SUV type car outside a known drug dealers house at midnight!

Did you know that the murder rate in COMPTON is 4TIMES the NATIONAL average...
