repost fr crafts: need honest opinions PLEASE

I was thinking of making my girls their jewelry for a few reasons: there are so many girls, most do not wear jewelry on a regular basis, and I think handmade stuff is very thoughtful. I love the simplicity of the illusion jewelry where it looks like it's floating. Is this a nice idea? Is it tacky because I'd be using fake pearls/stones?? Remember...most of them don't even wear jewelry (two BM's only wear their wedding rings, one is pregnant and has a small child and wears only her wedding ring and stuff her husband gave her, etc.)
Thanks for your opinions! Oh...and I'll be learning how to quilt so my MOH and my grandma will get one each and if I have time, my mom's and I have to figure out what to do for my FMIL since she's helping me quilt.

Re: repost fr crafts: need honest opinions PLEASE

I think it's a great idea and a very thoughtful and meaningful gesture as well.

I too was thinking of making jewelry for my bridesmaids to wear on the day of the wedding...but I scratched that idea and went another route.

One reason I didn't do it is because I didn't want to only give them jewelry to wear for the wedding...and this jewelry they would NEVER wear again. So, I bought them Tiffany bracelets instead that they can wear the day of and lots of times after.

I didn't make the jewelry anyhow and in addition to the Tiffany bracelets, because that would be too costly for me.

Good Luck with your jewelry making and show us the finished products when you can!

Re: repost fr crafts: need honest opinions PLEASE

Well - I have been making jewlery for years. I saw how much it cost to buy those beaded necklaces and I decided to buy my own stuff from wholesale stores in manhattan where I live.
In the end - i spent more trying to make them than if I bought them because some of the spacers can be very expensive and I had to buy more beads than I really needed.

If you find an inexpensive place - it can work. (I think there is one on 6th ave around 36th and another on 7th & 27th)

There are also classes at some places in NYC so if you are interested - let me know - i will look it up for you.
