For those working in the public school systems (on LI)

Any suggestions for getting your resume to the top of the pile when you send it in?

Same goes for the cover letter..... any ideas?

Just toying with the idea but I want to make mine GOOD before I even bother!

Re: For those working in the public school systems (on LI)

Send it directly to each elementary school in the district. If you send it to the district office, you're resume will probably just sit there in a HUGE pile! Also, take a lot of time and effort in making your cover letter stand out. Make sure there are no spelling and gramatical errors. Our principal is HUGE into catching teachers with this.

Good Luck!

Mail it in a manilla envelope. Someone once told me that administrators hate to see resumes sent in a white envelope. Something about it is too important to be folded.

If you are really interested in a particular district (s). Keep sending it. As resumes come in, your will keep moving to the bottom, if you keep sending one in, yours will always be somewhere near the top. Also, send letters confirming receipt of your resume and thanking them for taking the time to look at it.

Re: For those working in the public school systems (on LI)

I never once sent my resume folded...always in a manilla envelope...

create a letterhead for the cover letter...something with a line will help it stand out...

also a hint from my mom the school secretary...call and inquire to see if your resume got there...when they look for it they will put it back on the top of the pile...(most know this is a trick, but they do it anyway - and don't say anything...and the secretary just organizes the resumes...they don't say who gets and doesn't get interviews)

if there isn't a job listing...send it to a department chair...or the principal...or both...otherwise the district office will just file it...
