what do I give to a ONE year old for a one year b/day party

for a good friend? never really went to one before
any suggestions?

I gave my nephew the Sesame Street Kitchen for his 1st birthday and he loved it. It had different sounds when you used different colored pots. I also gave him some books. And usually I put a message in the front of the book pages so someday he will know that I gave them to him.

Do you want something super sentimental?

Michele- not supper sentimental
it is one of my friends kids, her first and his first b/day and they are having a party in the house- just have no idea what to get? a toy? etc...

Would you want to ask your friend if the baby needs anything specific?

ETA: A good friend's daughter is turing 1 yrs old soon too. I was thinking about buying a bunch of books - maybe a reading mat/rug or something like that.

Between my friends, they have 7 children, so I've been to quite a few b-day parties, not to mention my own nieces and nephew.

The last one I went to I got him 2 puzzles, the large size ones with the little grip for the hands. I also got him a doggie pull-toy, because his mom never lets him hold the lease to their own dog! He loved it!!

For the last two first year parties, I gave both little boys the Fischer Price (I think its FP) Rock and Roll Tricycle. They loved it. It's about $30.
