dog lovers - update on electric fence
Well we got it installed for our pup. It's the whole perimeter of the yard (including right near the street
..) I guess I have to trust it!Anyway, they put up flags, and the first step of training her is bringing her around the yard and showing her those and kind of hitting the flags and saying watch out in a stern voice. If she goes near it she gets a little beep warning. If she goes beyond it she gets a little buzz. it's set on the first level of buzzing and my husband tested the collar out on himself so I feel a little more comfortable.
Our regular trainer is coming tomorrow to spend time with her on it. I'll let you know how it goes! She goes off leash by the weekend....
NERVOUS MOMMIE.....

Re: dog lovers - update on electric fence
My trainer insists that she'll never get shocked. and if she does it will no way be more than once. It's a good point he has....the beeping near the flags already makes her retreat to her 'safety zone'.My only concern is that she'll get too skittish to even go outside...but she's been beeped and still is venturing forth, so hopefully that is a good sign.
All I know is it cost $900. The estimate on fencing in the property? $7000.....
The cost of puppy being contained while mommy can still buy a crib for the baby? Priceless......

I know what you mean, at this very moment DH is meeting with yet another fencing company trying to find someone who can fence our yard for under 7k. Its insane, lucky I love my dog so much.

Hey, not to freak you out or anything, but what kind of dog do you have??Our beagle goes through the fence. If he is after a scent he doesn't care about the shock because he wants to scent and then he just makes sure he goes through at super speed.
We have friends that use theres on their Shepards but naturally they are Shepards so it wouldn't make much difference anyway since they like to corrall

Re: dog lovers - update on electric fence
she's a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Not much of a thick skin. I have heard beagles are like WHO CARES and dart through.I only got it because my trainer said it's great for many breeds of dogs including mine. He did say beagles and BIG dogs - like big Rotweilers sometimes go through because the buzz isnt' effective enough on them.
She wont' be going out alone. I will stand there with her until I trust it. i mean for months. Thanks for the info though!

Re: dog lovers - update on electric fence
Jenny, I KNOW. Its criminal how much money they want. My hubby was going to try and put it up himself, but the ground on our property is rock after 2 feet or so, so we had to have a professional do it. My dog is 100 lbs (a black lab) and he would run through the fence...or would need a huge shock to stop him. I hear the fence works great for smaller dogs.On a good note, the fence guy can do the fence for less- so we are in contract for a fence, hooray! Of course, for what we are paying, we can get a new bedroom set, but hey, my dog is worth it

Re: dog lovers - update on electric fence
well..this sounds better than getting a cheap fence...my parents had theirs done in the late 80s and it is already rotting...
i think its great that DH tested it out on himself...what was his reaction? did he put it around his neck?
