baby shower for 2nd child

I'm from the 'other side' but need your advice!

My cousin is pregnant with her second child and I'd like to throw her a small baby shower. She is from another country and did not have one when she had her first so I thought it would be nice. Nothing fancy, just family in the backyard. Some of my aunts are saying this is totally improper. I say if she had had one before then of course I wouldn't have one, but I know she feels she's missed out on the registerering part, etc. plus her daughter is 8 and she probably needs all new stuff (besides the fact she is having a boy ). And she's also been such a big help to me with the wedding that I want to do something nice for her.

Am I totally breaking the etiquette rules here?

Re: baby shower for 2nd child

My sister is due w/ her 2nd boy in 26 days!! We're throwing her a shower in mid-September (she didn't want one before he was born since she lost a girl 3 years ago).

I see nothing wrong w/ a 2nd shower especially when the children are far apart in age (her older son will be 9 Sept. 6th). Besides, I'll get all the hand-me-downs when DH & I get preggers!! HEHE

Good luck!

Re: baby shower for 2nd child

I think it's a lovely idea. I never realized that people didn't give showers for second babies until last year. LOL...I just never noticed. I think more than enough time has passed...certainly someone with an 8 year gap between kids needs just as much as first time mothers do. That's my opinion. There may be some diehards who will object but so what? Actually my SIL is due at the same time as me with her second child. She already has a girl who is 22 months and knows #2 is a boy so we are going to throw her a 'Baby Sprinkle', just a small gathering to celebrate the coming baby and a few of us are going to chip in on a double stroller and she'll probably get some some boy things. Follow your heart

Re: baby shower for 2nd child

My moms and sister-in-law just threw me a shower for my #2. It's been 7 years since my first and I'm on my second marriage so it's all new for my husband and my in-laws. It was great!!! I had borrowed most of the baby things for my daughter(didn't register last time), and didn't really have any of the 'big' items saved. They've come out with so many neat things in 7 years--it was so much fun to run around Babies R Us and Buy Buy Baby to register.

Re: baby shower for 2nd child

We dont usually do 2nd baby showers-- but I gave my sister in law a luncheon when she was pregnant with my niece-- I 'got away' with it because the baby was my goddaughter!!!
