HELP!! Do you need your birth certificate to get marriage license???

Help...with only 6 days to go and an out of town FI...I still have not gotten my license. I am planning on getting it Friday...but now i can't find my birth certificate!!!!!
DO I NEED IT..or can I just use my passport and drivers license???? Anybody know!!!!

i think if you do not have your birth cert. you can use a passport b/c you need a birth cert. for a pass port to be issued!

If you get your marriage liscence on Long Island, you need driver's liscence AND birth certificate. If you get it any where in New York City, you only need to have your driver's liscence.

I do not have a suitable birth certificate, etiher, so that is what I am planning to do.

I was told you need your original b/c or passport and current driver's license. I thought they would mail it to us, but was told we get it the same day. What a relief! We are going on the 30th to get it. Good luck to you.

I copied this from Brookhaven Town Hall. I assume this is true for all of NY State. You should call your Town Hall. Do a Google search for your area and call to make sure. Good Luck!

MARRIAGE LICENSES
The Town Clerk is responsible for issuing a New York State Marriage License to qualified applicants as well as recording the marriage with the New York State Department of Health. The marriage record is on file in this office and in Albany.

Licenses to marry in New York State may be obtained from the Town Clerk's office regardless of the residence of either of the parties. Once the license is issued, the ceremony may be performed anywhere in the state. The requirements for the issuance of marriage licenses in the Town of Brookhaven are mandated by the provisions of the New York State Domestic Relations Laws.

A certified 'Transcript of Marriage' can be obtained by applying in person or by mail. Applicant should bring or mail the completed application to town for copy of marriage record along with photocopy of proper I.D (valid drivers license, non-drivers ID, Passport, or birth certificate), along with your return address and daytime telephone number along with the fee of $10.00. Payment may be made in cash or by local check or money order made payable to the 'Brookhaven Town Clerk”.

If you were born in New York City you can get your birth certificate in the city down on Worth St.

Just call the town hall where you plan to get the license or look at their website.

It is obvious that each town hall has different requirements. The Hempstead town hall told me that we didn't need a b/c just 2 forms of valid ID and $40.

BTW....I am in the same boat as you. FH and I missed our flight to NY last Friday and didn't get to NY in time to get our license. So we have to wait til Thurs before the wedding to get it.

General Information
The Office of Vital Records issues certified copies of birth and death certificates and also corrects and amends these records.

We only have your birth certificate if you were born in one of the five boroughs of New York City, either Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, or Staten Island. Where your family lived then or now is not important, just where you were born. Similary, we only have death certificates for people who died in the five boroughs.

Birth certificates prior to 1910 and death certificates prior to 1949 are not available through our Office. Contact the Municipal Archives at 311 or 212-NEW-YORK if outside of New York City. The address is 31 Chambers Street, Room 103, New York, NY 10007. You may also access the Municipal Archives Web site at www.nyc.gov/doris.

Birth certificates for newborns are automatically mailed approximately four weeks after birth; we are unable to provide information on the status of your certificate before then. Also, remember that our ability to promptly provide you with your baby's certificate depends first on the hospital forwarding the information to us promptly.

You do not have to apply separately for a Social Security card for your newborn if you apply at the hospital at the time of your child's birth. The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene regularly provides Social Security with the information they require. You can expect your baby's Social Security card within three months. If you did not request a social security card at the hospital of birth and would like to request one, please call the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213.
