NWR: Does anyone rent a house?

This is a repost from the Home Board.

Our real estate agent brought me to see a house for rent and it was everything we could want. Finished basement, attic, fireplace, huge backyard, two bedrooms. It just is outdated but we would only be renting.

Does anyone rent a house? Any good or bad experiences with this? We were originally going to buy a co-op but decided against it and then we wanted to rent an apartment. This house cost's the same as an apartment to rent. Any feedback? TIA

Any questions we should ask the Landlords? Sorry we are new at this

Re: NWR: Does anyone rent a house?

We don't rent a house, but a good friend of ours does. The only thing they had to adjust to in renting a home vs. an apt is that the home landlord comes by every Saturday to mow the lawn. So they see him every week, whereas they would never see the apt. landlord. However, this can also be seen as a good thing, b/c the landlord cares about the upkeep of the house and takes responsibility for it.

If the house you are thinking of renting is a bit run down I would make sure that the landlord is responsive if things need repair.

Re: NWR: Does anyone rent a house?

Our Landlord also would mow the grass but I didn't ask when yet. He lives very close but I feel that's great in case of an emergency. They rent out 7 houses so I guess he knows what he is doing. As long as I'm not sunbathing nude in the backyard I don't mind him mowing the lawn
It's a lot more responsibility but a great way to learn before buying our own house.
Thanks for the help

Re: NWR: Does anyone rent a house?

What does it cost to rent a house on LI? Does the money put into rent go towards the price of the house if you choose to buy it? Who is a good realtor to use?

Re: NWR: Does anyone rent a house?

It depends on how big the house is. It can range from $1500 to $3000. Sometimes more. Most of them are not including utilities. We are so excited though Much better then renting an apartment! I hope we get it Some houses have an option to buy but I amnot sure how that works. The house we are looking at does not have that option. It is a great stepping stone for us though
