on the subject of keeping it simple
so, many of you may know that I am trying to incorporate a Shakesperean element into my wedding.I wanted to use sonnets and play excerpts for my table numbers, but as you also may know, Shakespeares sonnets do not have names, they have roman numerals, which I think may get complicated to match up.
for example, the sonnet you all may know as 'Shall I Compare Thee to A Summer's Day', the actual title of the sonnet is XVIII...
do you think it would be too difficult to name the tabe XVIII? should it have a dual name or something, like Table 1, XVIII
I am completely open to suggestions. I just have an image of my guests running around from table to table trying to match the numerals to their placecards!

Re: on the subject of keeping it simple
Ohhh... I would get so confused with the numbers! I love the idea of your table names though!

Re: on the subject of keeping it simple
I think its all in how you lay it out...for example, have a main heading 'Table 1' then some sort of a symbol underneath it, then the Roman numeral and the sonet:Table 1

Re: on the subject of keeping it simple
Honestly Jess, it's a great idea, however, I think it would be very difficult for folks to match up their placecards to the table numbers like that. Here's my suggestion:
If you use a photo frame and put the sonnets on some type of paper with it's real title, I would put a transparent (vellum) page right on top with a large number (arabic number) - that way you can still have the sonnets with their real titles, and avoid the confusion of people running around trying to match up their cards to table....
Did I explain this clearly???

Re: on the subject of keeping it simple
I love the idea of table names verse numbers... but I think the Roman numerals would be hard to read. Especially with so many lll next to one another. If you had 'Table 1', etc under the numeral then that would be helpful. But how would your guests know the significance of the numerals?

Re: on the subject of keeping it simple
First, what are you using for table numbers?I think if the paper is big enough, you could put:
Table 1 (large font)
Sonnet XVIII(small font)
'Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer Day'
( in the same font as sonnet XVIII)
You should be able to fit all of it.

Thats what I thought too...and its all in how you lay it out...like Table 1 (all centered) can be on top in big font, underneath it some sort of a symbol or scroll and then underneath it in smaller font the sonnet.

Re: on the subject of keeping it simple
I think it would get too confusing with the roman numerals, especially for the older folks... I like the idea of putting - Table 1, Sonnet XVII... Also at the table maybe you could have the actual sonnet in a frame.. just an idea.

Re: on the subject of keeping it simple
an additional hitch is this...Christine really hooked me on those pillar candle things....so what i wanted to do is just have the table number (title of Sonnet) in a frame and then have 2 pillar candles on either side of the table with the poem in velum like what she did yesterday...am I making ANY sense...
also, just so you know, the tables are oblong and seat 14 and my cps are fairly small since I was going to include pillar candles anyway, so I definitely will have the room for all of this in the center.

The only difficult thing I see happening with the pillar candle thingy is this: b/c it's a round vase, it's hard to see all the text completly without turning the vase around.
My suggestion: Do the Table Number Votives with Just the Table Numbers - One in Regular Number (ie: Table One) , then do another with the Title of the Sonnet (ie: Sonnet XVII) and then put a frame in the middle of the two with the actual sonnet.

'Casablanca'
That way I get my theme in, but don't confuse everyone.

Re: on the subject of keeping it simple
I agree, that the Roman numerals can be kinda difficult to read. Esp after having a few drinks at the CH!! I like Lisa's idea, you could certainly do that with the plays.

Thought it might be easier to 'visualize' instead of describing what my idea is:
LOL thanks for the visual....
I see what you are saying, but I kinda like the poem in the candle..I don't particularly care if they have to turn it...
can you show me a visual of the text around the pillars and lisa's number set up in the frame
(which I love Lisa by the way- the 'now showing' is great)

Re: on the subject of keeping it simple
I'm totally confused!!!
Actually I do think the Roman numerals would be confusing, I'm not too sure about the votives and the picture frames either. I think the simpler the better. The Table One, Sonnet # and Sonnet phrase underneath. would be the best way to go. It's simple and you still get to keep your theme. JMO
