QOTD -Friday 9/5/03

Where do you keep your valuable things? I mean wedding album, proofs, negatives, passports etc.

A friend almost had a house fire tonight, and she made me realize how important it is to get a fireproof, waterproof safe for my home.

I keep jewelery and things in a safe deposit box, but I never gave it much thought of what would happen if fire, godforbid!

I have fire insurance, but as you know, some things just can never be replaced!

Re: QOTD -Friday 9/5/03

Jen, as a matter of fact this weekend we are going to BJ's to get one, b/c my negatives and my proofs and my albums are just laying around in the house. It is scary, especially when I think of how I could never replace them

Re: QOTD -Friday 9/5/03

It's not Thurs yet but I'll answer now - I probably won't be able to get on tomorrow anyway!

I don't currently use a safe deposit box. Stupid, I know. The really important family things are there - my mom's will, deed to house, etc., but my most valueable things don't yet include much

I wear my ering everywhere I go, my SS card, passport, etc are all at home with me.

Wedding album will stay with me - it's meant to be shown to people, not to collect dust in a box somewhere :)

I thought about getting a fireproof box just to store all of my late father's things, but never got around to it. I did price the boxes and they're up there!

we do have a fire proof box that I keep all valuables (such as jewelry) and important papers and documents in. But I don't have my wedding album in it. They need to make a bigger box

Re: QOTD -Friday 9/5/03

I learned the tragic way about keeping valuables in a fireproof box. In Dec 99, my whole apt building burned to the ground in NY (westchester) and I lost everything except the clothes I was wearing. Didn't have anything in a fireproof box. At the time my most valuable items were my cd's and my computer. The computer was the biggest lose...all my grad school work including thesis were on the hard drive and on back up disks...all of which were destroyed. So yes, everyone should have a fireproof safe!!!!

This has me thinking now. Where can I get a fireproof box or that safe you posted Jenn? And does anyone know about how much they cost?

Re: QOTD -Friday 9/5/03

We have our important papers in a file cabinet.
My proofs are on top of a shelf (out of reach of our sons hands)

My wedding rings I wear (except at night it's stays on my night stand)

My most VALUBALE jewelry is my Mom's engagement ring & that NEVER leaves my body!!
(Nothing against my own wedding rings)

Re: QOTD -Friday 9/5/03

We have a fire proof box (got it at Home D) for our birth certificates, SS cards, any important info, our marriage certificate, etc. I always thought about my pictures, not just wedding pictures but pics I have taken over the years as well and that I would be running to try and grab all of those if we ever had a fire because those are things that I could never replace and mean the world to me.

Like Tracy, my most valuable rings (wedding rings) are always on me.

Re: QOTD -Friday 9/5/03

We don't have anything like a safe or fireproof box. But now it's got me thinking. We have our wedding album stored in a hope chest, along with most of our other valuables. We don't yet own the negatives to our wedding photos (we can get them in 3 years). All my valuable jewelry I wear allt he time. It think that everything is replaceable except for us, but the sentimental things would be hard to replace.

Re: QOTD -Friday 9/5/03

We have a fireproof box that we got at Staples for like $50 I think. It has our birth certificates and marriage license in it right now. I don't have my negatives (I can't get them in like 6 years), so no need to worry about that.

Our album is meant to be looked at, so that is out, and our proofs are in an album.

Any valuable jewelry I have I take to my parents house when I know we'll be away for anything more than a day.

Re: QOTD -Friday 9/5/03

We are going to BJ's tomorrow to get one. The one Jen posted above cost $299. We have our proofs and all our negatives. I wonder where photographers keep your negatives...hmmmmm*wonders* I want to see what the size is so that I can judge if my album can fit in it.

I wear my rings all the time, I don't have much valuables, but as soon as we get the one tomorrow I will throw what little I have in there when we are out of the house. Passport, birth certificate, marriage license, certificate for my ring. When I told hubby this morning he definitely agreed that we needed the safe. I think its a must.

Re: QOTD -Friday 9/5/03

Jenn Im sorry to hear of your friends situation.

Thanks for the reminder we have been talking about a safe deposit box for months and never make it to the bank. Thats first on the to do list for tomorrow.

Regarding the home safe or security box read up on them before you purchase. The prices vary greatly and you definately get what you pay for. I forget what the ratings mean but basicly they are made to withstand a certain amount of heat for a specific period of time.

Re: QOTD -Friday 9/5/03

shamma - do you know if BJs carries them? i just looked on the costco site, but they have either really expensive ($300+) or smaller ones that are affordable but to small.

will you let me know if you find a good sized okay priced one at BJs?

thanks!

Re: QOTD -Friday 9/5/03

Smooch, that is where I first saw them. I will gladly report back tomorrow. I will even take my camera and take pix so you ladies can see, I will see what the prices are like and what the specifications etc are like.

Thanks Fran for the reminder, I think Consumer report had something regarding that.
