Question for those getting married in a Catholic Church
The church is requiring a $600 donation for the ceremony. Do I have to tip on top of that? Also, do you invite the priest to the reception? Thanks!

Re: Question for those getting married in a Catholic Church
I am paying $500 for the church (which includes organist) and $75 for a cantor. I am not tipping on top of that.I invited my priest to the reception and he responded no.

Re: Question for those getting married in a Catholic Church
IMO $550 is enough for a 20 minute ceremony - I am not tipping on top of that. Not sure if I am inviting the priest to the reception. He wouldnt know anyone there!

Re: Question for those getting married in a Catholic Church
Our church is $250 for the church, $250 for music and $60 for pre-cana. I think that is plenty. We are not inviting the priest to the reception either.

Re: Question for those getting married in a Catholic Church
I did. I tipped priest, alter boys and singer/organist on top of the existing church fees. I have always read that it was customary so that is what I did. The organist did a special favor to us so he was necessary in my eyes - even though he said he wanted no money for his services.

Re: Question for those getting married in a Catholic Church
My priest can't accept monotary gifts. We are paying $550 for EVERYTHING. We're not tipping anymore than that. WE are inviting the priest to the reception as well.

Re: Question for those getting married in a Catholic Church
I wasn't sure how it worked either but I thought that you were supposed to invite the priest to the reception regardless of anything? Maybe I'm wrong! I know that when my relatives were married, the priest always showed up to the reception, even if for just a little while...

Re: Question for those getting married in a Catholic Church
The priest who's marrying us is a former professor of FH's, and FH also helped him with research, etc., so we are going to invite him. Though I am not sure how tipping works out, since he's not affiliated with the parish we're getting married in. But I know we have to give a donation to the church.

Re: Question for those getting married in a Catholic Church
I don't understand why it is necessary to tip a priest.

Re: Question for those getting married in a Catholic Church
I think my church charged $300. We gave the priest a $100 tip and sent him an invitation to the wedding (he declined). The organist was $75 or $100 and the cantor was $35. I don't remember tipping them, but since I tipped just about everyone that day, I might have given them something.
