Questions to ask photographer

I know this has been asked numerous times, but I must be really dense b/c I can't do the search on questions to ask photographers. Anyone have a list that they can share? Thanks in advance!

Questions to ask photographer

i wanted to make sure that my photographer would take black and whites and that they would take a lot of candids. I would find out how many pics in your album, I got 36 and found out after that most people got more. also, most people are getting somewhere around 500 proof and I get 300, bc I didn't know to ask. Lastly, somehow I walked out of there without thank-you pictures, because they weren't part of the pkg. he sold me and I was too overwhelmed to realize it. Now they want a dollar a picture....

What photographer did you use? I would think that the Thank You cards are a standard in most packages. They really should have been able to throw that in for you, that is why I am curios who they are. I don't think that is good business charging you for Thank Yous.

what is average for proofs

Is 500 typical? Also some photographers do black and white and switch back and forth throughout the day, but what if there are pictures you would have liked in black and white and they were taken in the color? Also what is average number of pictures you need in an album, doesnt that depend on how many proofs. I know to make sure you get the negatives, at least i have one word of advice instead of all questions to add haha

photog info (long)

yes - my girlfriend paid $200 I think for her negatives (which obviously they don't give you till the end) and this guy is giving me them for free. I think I got a decent pkg, for $3900 including video with a DVD. It is Duval Studio's in Wantagh which came recommended to me. The only thing that's really bugging me is the thank you pictures, I may call them, but have already signed the contract so don't kow how far it will get me. We went with the least expensive parent albums, but now I'm thinking that I might want to ditch the parent albums and buy nice albums and make them up myself with proofs/negatives that I remake - since the parent albums are slip in's anyway. Maybe I can trade the parent albums for more pics in my album and thank-you's, we'll see. All in all, I don't feel taken advantage of, Glen at Duval was very nice and accomadating and like I said they were recommended, I just wish I had a list of things to ask. We say an actual DVD which was very good, my FH loved all the special effect stuff, I think the breakdown was 2600$ for the photos and $1500 for the video, and then he knocked $200 off that night if we booked right then. Also paying cash and no tax. Sorry so long! I don't know what is avg. for proofs, but I've been hearing 500-1000.

Are negatives always included?

I have heard that some photographers resist on giving the negatives. Don't we have a right to have them since they are our photos that were taken?

photog info (long)-jpsgirl

This was very helpful-thanks! I am thinking of personalizing the parents albums rather than have the photographer make them. I want to make them more special rather than slipping pictures in. Do many photographers knock off tax? That would be really nice...

i think they may (knock off tax for cash) but I don't know....I was glad mine did! My girlfriend photog charged her 200$ for the negatives, I guess many resist bc then if you want more pictures you have to order from them and they will make more money. I love the idea of getting the negatives, but keep in mind you wouldn't get them till the very end when all the albums are bought and paid for....
