What is the difference between a Sheriff and a Police Officer?

Dh and I were discussing this and we have no idea? Do thy work out of the same precincts? Are they just in Suffolk?

ummm i'm gonna take a willld guess. the sheriffs work for the county, and police officers work for municipalities?

That sounds right. But what do the Sheriffs do? Do they go to calls like a suffolk county cop? I really never thought about this until today.

a sheriff can work in a jail, transport inmates to court...... cops give out tickets........
